It is fair to say that Nuri Sahin has not had the smoothest start to his managerial career.
The erstwhile assistant to Edin Terzic was handed the reins at Borussia Dortmund over the summer, but Sahin found himself under pressure heading into the November international break after a mixed bag of results.
BVB had been even more Jekyll and Hyde than usual in the first three months of the campaign, and key members of the club’s hierarchy were forced to come out and give Sahin their full-throated backing amid rumours that he was on the brink of the sack.
Yet Sahin remains popular with Dortmund fans, who are hoping the 4-0 victory over Freiburg on Saturday proves to be a turning point. Their opponents had enjoyed a bright start to the season, but BVB blew them away with a brilliant all-round performance.
“We started very well. We controlled the spaces. We allowed very little,” Sahin told the media after the match.
“Overall, it was a mature performance from my boys. We scored great goals, showed good energy. We kept them away from our goal throughout. It was a fully deserved victory and I, as a coach, am very satisfied.”
The key now is to build on it. Whenever Dortmund have taken a step forwards recently, a step backwards has followed soon after. Sahin’s side are yet to win three consecutive games this term.
Their struggles have mostly come away from Signal Iduna Park. At home, Dortmund have been magnificent: eight games in front of their own supporters have produced eight wins.
It is a completely different story on unfamiliar turf. Dortmund have lost six matches in a row on the road if we include an extra-time defeat by Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal. Only one of their seven away games across the Bundesliga and Champions League has ended in victory.
That solitary triumph came in this competition. Dortmund are seventh in the 36-team table ahead of this trip to Croatia, so they are in a decent position at the midway point of the league phase.
Remember, a top-eight finish is required to advance directly to the round of 16. A win on Wednesday would be a step in that direction for Sahin’s side.

Borussia Dortmund will be seeking all three points when they take on Dinamo Zagreb.

Dinamo Zagreb supporters must have been fearing the worst after watching their team lose 9-2 to Bayern Munich on matchday one.
Since then, however, Dinamo have drawn 2-2 with Monaco and beaten both Red Bull Salzburg (2-0) and Slovan Bratislava (4-1).
That has lifted them into contention for a place in the knockout phase play-offs, for which a finish between ninth and 24th is required.

There are some tricky tests on the horizon, though, with Arsenal and AC Milan among their remaining opponents.
Notwithstanding their dismal away record, we fancy Borussia Dortmund to collect maximum points against Dinamo Zagreb this week.
BVB are unlikely to have everything their own way, but they will have gained confidence from the 4-0 victory over Freiburg last time out.

With Serhou Guirassy missing out with a hip injury, Max Beier took full advantage of his chance against Freiburg.
His goal at the weekend was only his second for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga following a summer switch from Hoffenheim.
Guirassy is expected to sit out Wednesday’s game too, giving Beier another opportunity to make his mark.
The 22-year-old made the net ripple 16 times for Hoffenheim in 2023/24, so he clearly knows where the goal is.
