Moustapha Mukasa’s 2024 national rally championship run has been an episode of surprises, drama and ultimately satisfaction.
From securing his maiden NRC podium, to leading the NRC standings, a disappointment that dropped him off the title contention and later securing his best NRC finish overall at the end of the season, Moustapha has lived it all these past eleven months.
With four podiums in seven events, Mukasa finished the season as the second runners-up on the NRC championship.
“We are grateful to God because we were able to get this far. This is our best NRC finish since we started rallying.”
“So we are happy. At one point we topped the NRC table and then God decided what was best for us and we are grateful for that,” he said.
At the beginning of the season, there was no anticipation of Mukasa and co-driver Lawrence Mwambazi in a Mitsubishi IX being among the title contenders for the season.
A second position in Masaka rally would elevate the Equity Bank and Drugs Express sponsored crew among the title hopefuls.
Another second position in Jinja rally, and later a third position in Fort Portal would put the crew on top of the NRC standings.
And with two events to end the event, the odds were heavily weighted on the crew winning the season title.
However, the smooth run of the season was broken in the Gulu rally. The Mitsubishi suffered mechanical issues and could not start day one of the event. The problems persisted; forcing them to retire.
That all took the team out of the national championship title race.
“The good performance we had this season, could still happen again and much better in the coming seasons.”
“We shall continue to learn from what we experienced this year to better ourselves. The most important thing is that we finished the season in one piece,” he added.
Moustapha says there could be good things coming in the new season with his hopes heightened by his exploits this past season.
