AFRIYEA Golf Academy Uganda has integrated greenkeeping skills into its golf coaching programs for young Ugandans participating in its school golf programs.

This forward-thinking effort is designed to provide young learners with holistic opportunities to engage with the game of golf while equipping them with essential skills to explore diverse career paths within the golf industry.

The program emphasizes the importance of greenkeeping—a vital yet often overlooked aspect of the golf ecosystem.

Greenkeepers are responsible for maintaining the good condition of golf courses, ensuring they meet high standards for players and spectators.

By introducing children to the fundamentals of greenkeeping, AFRIYEA Golf Academy aims to spark interest in this field, fostering technical expertise and preparing students for potential roles in the golf industry.

“This program is about more than just teaching golf it’s about opening up a world of possibilities for our young people. Greenkeeping offers technical skills that are essential to the golf industry, and by integrating it into our academy, we are preparing the next generation to make a meaningful impact both on and off the course,” said Isaiah Mwesige, CEO of AFRIYEA Golf Academy.

Katusiime Penelope, a 9-year-old in Primary Four at Green School of Image, shared her experience:

Learning about greenkeeping has been amazing! I now understand how much work goes into keeping the golf course beautiful. Practically learning the efforts that go into working on the bunkers, cleaning the green mowers, and how to push them from green to green to cut is a bigger commitment than everyone thinks.

Greenkeeping is an integral part of the golf industry that often goes unnoticed. By equipping these young learners with greenkeeping skills, we are not only creating job opportunities but also building a sustainable future for golf in Uganda. It’s incredible to see their enthusiasm for learning something so vital.

This initiative goes beyond teaching golf as a sport; it seeks to open doors to broader opportunities, including scholarships, mentorship, and international exchange programs.

These pathways will inspire young people to gain practical knowledge and develop into skilled professionals capable of elevating the quality and sustainability of golf courses in Uganda and beyond.
