- Event: 10th Kigezi women football tournament
- Dates: 14th – 15th December 2024
- Categories: U-12 & Open (Free entry)
- Venue: Kabale Municipal Stadium
There are eminent signs of thick steam evaporating from some spot extra-ordinarily boiling up in Kabale.
Wild guesses could point to the world’s second deepest crater lake, Bunyonyi who is a treasure in the entire Kabale, Uganda and Africa at large.
But no! the steam is from the forthcoming Kigezi women football tournament that was started to empower, educate and reduce the inequality in sports.
This annual tournament will take center stage on Saturday, 14th December 2024 and on spill-over on the subsequent day at the Kabale Municipal stadium.
Diana Nkamusiima, the tournament CEO and main organizer is delighted to reveal the euphoria surrounding this championship that has U-12 and open categories.
“The vibe is ripe prior to the 10th edition of the Kigezi women’s football tournament” Nkamusiima testifies with an ear-to-ear smile.
“Teams from near and far have confirmed to be part. So far, we have 20 teams in the open categories and over 10 in the U-12 categories. It will be epic action for the two days on the 14th and 15th December 2024 in Kabale” she adds.
Teams from Kabale, Rukungiri, Rukiiga, Rubanda, Isingiro, Ntungamo, Kanungu, Kisoro, Hoima and elsewhere have confirmed to be part.
Prizes:
The top performers in the open category will take home a glittering trophy, medals and a bull with a goat for the U-12’s.
There will also be other prizes as balls, boots and other items.
Partners:
A number of stakeholders have joined hands together to assist in making this championship a success. These include; G-Maso, Nsiimbi Mobile, Dr Sylvia Tumuheirwe Alinaitwe (Director finance and accounts, national water and sewerage corporation), Bathel Clinic, The Aliguma Foundation, among others.
“More partners are called upon to join and support such a noble cause. We need more balls, uniforms, money and other gear that can help in smooth organization” Nkamusiima pleads.
Last year, Unique sports academy overcame St Aloysious Girls secondary school from Rukiga 1-0 to win the trophy.
Success stories:
A number of female footballers have engaged in this tournament since inception.
Many have gone ahead to acquire schools on bursary schemes, placements in clubs and employment places.
Others as Joanita Ayinembabazi have also graduated to the national female teams and also played professionally outside the boarder zones of Uganda.
Such is the power of the Kigezi women football tournament.
