Atalanta vs AC Milan predictions
Amid a difficult end to a summer transfer window in which several of their players were once again linked with a move away, Atalanta made a slow start to the Serie A season.
Two of their first three league games ended in defeat, while by the end of September Gian Piero Gasperini’s side sat a lowly 12th in the standings.
No one has been able to live with them since then. A 2-0 victory over Roma on Monday was Atalanta’s eighth triumph in a row in Serie A.
If we include the Champions League, Atalanta have won 11 of their last 12 matches in all competitions. The exception was a 0-0 draw with Celtic, a game that la Dea would have won nine times out of 10 on the balance of play.
Could Atalanta really challenge for the Serie A title? It is something they have never quite managed under Gasperini, who has done a sensational job since taking over in Bergamo in 2016.
Atalanta finished third for three seasons on the bounce between 2018 and 2021.
The closest they got to the title in that time was 2019/20, when they finished five points behind champions Juventus. Yet they were never in genuine contention that year; Atalanta only managed to get that close to Juve because the latter tailed off once the prize had been won.
Gasperini has done a brilliant job of regenerating this Atalanta team. The current squad is vastly different to the one that finished third again in 2020/21.
Whether or not the starting XI is better is a matter for debate, but there is no doubt that Gasperini’s present group contains more strength in depth. Atalanta have a larger wage bill these days, albeit one that is still much lower than the traditional big three of Inter, Juventus and AC Milan.
Gasperini’s team won the Europa League last term, while they are going strong in the Champions League this time around. Just one point adrift of top spot in Serie A, it is hard to argue that Atalanta are not among the leading contenders for this season’s scudetto.

AC Milan will make the short trip to Bergamo to face high-flying Atalanta this weekend.
Atalanta to win
Like Atalana, AC Milan have also recovered from a poor start to the campaign. Paulo Fonseca seemed close to the sack early on, but he has pulled it around since then.
Milan cruised to a 3-0 victory over Empoli in their last Serie A outing. There is still work to do, however: they sit seventh in the table ahead of Friday’s fixture, 10 points adrift of top spot and six short of fourth.

Milan will draw belief from the fact that they tend to turn up in the big games. They won the derby against Inter earlier this season and memorably beat Real Madrid away from home in Europe.
But Atalanta have the bit between their teeth right now and it is hard to see how anyone can stop them.
Atalanta’s winning run will come to an end at some point, but probably not here.

Over 2.5 goals
Never say never in football, but it is hard not to see this bet coming through.
With 36 goals to their name, Atalanta are the most prolific scorers in Serie A. There have been at least three goals scored in eight of their last nine Serie A home games stretching back to the end of last season.
AC Milan, who hit six goals past Sassuolo in the Coppa Italia in midweek, will give this a good go too. Fonseca will encourage his team to get at Atalanta whenever they can.
Both of these teams tend to give their opponents a chance. Milan’s last away game in Serie A was a 3-3 draw with Cagliari. Their last away game in the Champions League was a 3-2 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
Expect goals at the Gewiss Stadium on Friday night.

Ademola Lookman to score any time
Ademola Lookman wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain last summer and was ultimately disappointed the move did not come off.
He might have a different view now. With PSG struggling in the Champions League and flattering to deceive in Ligue 1, Lookman is flying under Gasperini.
The Nigeria international, who scored a fantastic hat-trick in the Europa League final in May, has picked up from where he left off.
Lookman has scored nine goals in 16 appearances in all competitions, including a brace in a 3-0 win at Napoli last month.
The former Everton man can make an impact against AC Milan on Friday.
