Atletico Madrid vs Slovan Bratislava predictions

All of a sudden, Atletico Madrid have emerged as Europe’s entertainers.

A 4-3 victory over Sevilla on Sunday was just the most recent example of Diego Simeone’s side thrilling the watching public. A week earlier they had smashed five goals past Real Valladolid without reply. In their last Champions League outing, Atletico demolished Sparta Prague 6-0.

All of this is new for the regulars at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano. Simeone has long been regarded as a defence-first manager who prioritises clean sheets above all else.

Atletico supporters have wanted to see more from their team for a while. They were big spenders in the summer; no team in Spain, Italy, France or Germany splashed more cash ahead of the current campaign.

Moreover, Simeone is the best-paid manager in the world. Atletico are not expected to win trophies every single year, but it did not seem unfair to ask why they were not capable of playing a more expansive brand of football.

Of course, this could just be a brief period in which everything clicks in attack. Atletico have now got themselves back into the La Liga title conversation, so Simeone may choose to tighten things up as the season wears on. The same will be true of matches in the knockout phase of the Champions League.

It is remarkable how quickly Atletico have turned things around. In late October, the Colchoneros fell 10 points adrift of top spot in La Liga. They were also struggling in Europe, going down to Benfica and Lille in back-to-back matches.

Things are now looking up on all fronts. With three wins out of five, Atletico sit 15th in the Champions League table. A top-eight finish would send them directly through to the round of 16, whereas a berth between ninth and 24th would bring a place in the knockout phase play-offs.

Atletico will feel they can still make the top eight, which they would surely do if they beat Slovan Bratislava and Bayer Leverkusen at home, and Red Bull Salzburg away.

In the form they are in – the 4-3 against Sevilla was their ninth win on the bounce in all competitions – Atletico are a match for anyone in Europe.

Atletico Madrid vs Slovan Bratislava betting tips

Atletico Madrid host Slovan Bratislava as the Champions League resumes for matchday six.

Atletico Madrid -2.5 Asian handicap

Slovan Bratislava were among the rank outsiders when the tournament began and nothing has changed after five rounds of games.

Slovan are second-bottom of the standings having lost every match they have contested so far. Defeats by Celtic, Manchester City, Girona, Dinamo Zagreb and AC Milan have left the Slovakian outfit on the brink of an early elimination.

Even in some of the games that looked more winnable on paper, Slovan have been poor. They lost 5-1 to Celtic and 4-1 to Dinamo Zagreb, for instance.

With that in mind, it is difficult to see how they will be able to keep the goals out against an Atletico Madrid team that is scoring for fun.

This should be a reasonably comfortable 90 minutes for Simeone and his charges.

⚽ Back Atletico Madrid with a -2.5 Asian handicap at 7/10 with bet365 ⚽

Over 3.5 goals

It does not fit the stereotype about Simeone, but Atletico Madrid’s Champions League matches have been very watchable indeed.

Their five matches in this competition have contained a total of 20 goals, which works out at an average of four per game.

Only encounters involving Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord , Dinamo Zagreb, Red Star Belgrade and, yes, Slovan Bratislava have seen the ball enter the net more often.

This bet would have paid out in four of Slovan’s five continental contests up to now.

Given how well Atletico have been attacking in recent weeks, goals should be on the cards in this one – albeit more for the hosts than the visitors.

⚽ Tip over 3.5 goals at 11/10 with bet365 ⚽

Danylo Ignatenko to be shown a card

No player in the Champions League has received as many yellow cards as Marko Tolic, who has entered the referee’s notebook on four occasions.

That includes the red card he received for two quick-fire bookings against AC Milan last time out. As a result, Tolic will miss Wednesday’s game.

Slovan will not have much of the ball here, so we can expect them to be physical and aggressive in an attempt to disrupt Atletico.

Danylo Ignatenko, a combative midfielder who will look to get in the faces of his opponents, could come a cropper at some point.

Ignatenko has been booked twice in the Champions League and has committed nine fouls. Only seven players in the whole competition have been penalised more often.

⚽ Select Danylo Ignatenko to be shown a card at 11/8 with bet365 ⚽
