CHESS: Elephante Commons to host inaugural Gulu end of year open championship

The first ever Gulu end of year open chess championship will be held at the Elephante Commons in Gulu City on Sunday, 22nd December 2024.

This event will accommodate all categories of players; ranging from the open, women, seniors, persons with disabilities to the juniors (U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16, U-18).

The event will be played as a single section but winners will be sorted according to their respective categories.

Being the inaugural edition, the organizing committee has offered a free entry for all participants but the total number will be restricted to 80 players; judged on a first come, first serve basis.

Games will commence as early as 9 AM with the opening round until the 7th round that will be proceeded by the official prize giving ceremony.

Rewards:

The rewards will vary from cash for open category players to medals and trophies for the rest of the categories.

There will also be special prizes to the best senior (above 50 years) and best Person with Disability (PWD).

The tournament chief arbiter will be IA Stephen Kisuze Ssemango (FM, FI).

The chief organizer is FI AO Patrick Ojok who is deputized by Mc Donald Oketa.

Lino Ogora is in charge of publicity with Richard Owiny the main coordinator. Lovelle Odong is registration manager.

The event is sponsored by Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) with an offer of chess board.

The main host of the championship is Elephante Commons.

For starters, Elephante is an innovation incubator that believes that a communal culture requires a communal solution.

Elephante runs several events within their Gulu City facility and also provide restaurant and accommodation services for guests.
