The Detroit Lions are cooking.
Head coach Dan Campbell has turned a struggling franchise into a Super Bowl contender with one of the NFL’s most high-octane offenses.
Sam LaPorta strolled in untouched[/caption]
Their latest victims were the NFC North rival Chicago Bears – the ugly duckling of a stacked division.
The Lions were leading 27-14 in the third quarter when offensive coordinator Ben Johnson called a downright nasty play.
Cries of “fumble, fumble, fumble” could be heard after the snap as quarterback Jared Goff stumbled backward.
Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs even took a tumble worthy of an Oscar nomination.
The Bears soon realized it was all a ruse. It was too late.
Tight end Sam LaPorta was streaking down the field wide open and Goff had all the time he needed to pick out his man for a 21-yard score – the last points in a comfortable 34-17 win.
Neutral fans were delighted.
“Genuinely one of the coolest plays I’ve ever witnessed, This is up there with the Saquon backwards hurdle,” said one.
“They be clownin’ the Bears,” added another.
“You can hear “FUMBLE” about 11 times in the first 2 seconds,” a third posted alongside a skull emoji.
Johnson is being linked with several head coach roles[/caption]
Some Bears fans tried to look for a silver lining as their season hit a new low.
Johnson is being touted as a potential head coach and this could have been his audition for a move to the Windy City.
“That’s our next head coach,” said one.
“If I was Ryan Poles I’m giving him however much money he want to be the head coach of my team,” added another in a call to the Bears’ general manager.
Before any potential talks are held, Johnson will be trying to go on a long postseason run with the Lions.
Some viewers were wondering why he had decided to open up his bag of tricks against the lowly Bears, insisting he should save it for the playoffs.
Others are excited to see what Johnson can conjure up under the lights.
Head coach Campbell loves a gamble, there is plenty of talent on the roster, and the OC is emerging as a respected mind.
All the ingredients seem to be in place, and the NFC rival Philadelphia Eagles lost quarterback Jalen Hurts to a concussion on Sunday.
No updates on the talisman’s condition have been issues but he would be a major loss.
Two AFC powerhouses remain the Super Bowl favorites as the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills continue to stack wins.
