Pool players in Uganda were involved in the official Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) season ending tourney, the end of year championship played at the L’Amour Bar and Restaurant in Kansanga, a suburb of Kampala.
Played over two days, Ibra Kayanja and Rukia Naiga emerged victorious.
Kayanja overcame the hard fighting Zambian national Kelvin Nkandu 9-7 in nail-biting fashion to win the men gong; winning over 79 other men.
“I am humbled for this victory. I thank my management and fans, this is sweet victory” an overwhelmed Kayanja remarked.
Kayanja earned a plaque, Ug.Shs 2,000,000 and 10 championship seeding points.
Christened as Musilaamu, Kayanja bundled out Ian Kazibwe 7-6 in the semi-finals and had earlier eliminated another Ibra entity Ssejjemba 6-4 during the quarter finals.
Kayanja was flawless at the last 16 stage with a 6-3 victory over Ceaser Chandiga, humiliated Ronald Akampulira 5-1 during round three (last 32) and smiled past Emmanuel Choul with the same score-line at the round of 64.
In the ladies’ final, it was a battle between two biological sisters; Naiga against Rashida Mutesi.
Naiga smiled past Mutesi 6-4 in the well-contested finale to win Ug.Shs 1,500,000 prize money, a gold medal and a plaque.
Naiga had eliminated left hander Ritah Nimusiima 4-2 in the semi-finals whilst Mutesi condemned Marion “Ankah Sheila” Kisakye 5-1 during the other contest.
At the quarter final stage; Naiga edged out Zaimati Nabafu 5-4 with Mutesi whipping Sharon Obako 6-1.
Naiga overcame Prossy Namuli 3-2 at the round of 16 level and won 5-1 over Racheal Namawanda during the round of 32.
The event was organized by the Pool Association of Uganda and it attracted 80 male players with 43 females.
Focus turns to the new year where the national league will continue and a couple of upcoming tournaments.
