Wayne Rooney insists that speculation about him taking a woman to his flat is ‘simply not true’.
Viral footage of the Manchester United legend and current Plymouth Argyle boss was posted on X at the weekend.
It appeared to show Rooney inviting a woman into his apartment, seemingly after a night out.
However, the England icon has taken to Instagram to shut down the speculation and explain the situation in the video.
“I am aware of a video circulating online,” he said on his story on Monday evening.
“The videos shows a man and woman looking around my apartment. The couple kindly gave me a lift home and were in there at the same time as my son who was visiting.
“Footage is from last summer. It is annoying that at least one online newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear as though a woman entered the apartment on her own.
“That is simply not true.”
Footage of Rooney’s flat can be seen in the video, with the person filming presumed to be the man in the couple.
The timing of its release led fans to believe that he was on a night out the evening before Plymouth’s match at Oxford United.
However, this would no longer be the case as per Rooney’s statement.
Plymouth lost 2-0 against Oxford on Sunday and remain bottom of the Championship table.
Their winless streak has also extended to nine games, with their last victory coming against Portsmouth on November 5.
It was reported that both Oxford and Plymouth fans chanted ‘Sacked in the morning!’ at Rooney at the weekend.
Rooney recently received backing from Frank Lampard despite a 4-0 defeat at his former England teammate’s Coventry City.
“I know the challenges of each job and you only know when you’re in it,” Lampard told talkSPORT. “Wayne obviously has his career behind him and now his management career as well, which he’s gone straight into.
“There will be challenges for him there. It’s not for me to comment on that, I’m very happy with us today. I always wish Wayne well because he’s a proper football person.
“Again, there’s challenges so people have to understand he’s working. I hope to see him do well because he’s a young English manager with a lot to give and that continues to be the case.”
