Victoria University Crocs found little resistance in the opening game of the FUBA Division I Playoffs, easing past Entebbe Knight Riders 95-61 on Saturday afternoon at YMCA, Wandegeya.
The Crocs, chasing a return to the National Basketball League, made their intentions clear right from tipoff. They ran to a 29-3 lead halfway through the opening quarter and never slowed down until the fourth quarter when victory was all but sealed.
Leading by 17 at the end of the opening quarter, Roger Sserunyigo’s charges extended the lead to 20s in the second quarter and peaked at 40 by the end of the third period.
Wing Cyrus Wobusobozi and power forward Marier Nyong led the way, scoring 17 points apiece with the former dropping 10 dimes.
Joseph Kumbai contributed 14 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Innocent Emokol scored 12 points while Erick Komagum and Cedric Alema chipped in with 10 points each.
Sydney Chasimba who netted a game-high 20 points to go with 6 boards was the only scorer to reach double figures for Knight Riders who were without centre Andrew Opio and Jasper Alinda.
Meanwhile, fully loaded Rezlife Saints edged shorthanded Miracle Eagles 62-48 under the sun at KIU in Kansanga.
While he did not lace up, veteran guard Mike Otieno took charge of his first game following the departure of coach Daniel Jjuko late last year.
It, however, wasn’t smooth as the Eagles who had just six players available and without head coach Arnold Katabi competed until they ran out of legs in the second half of the game.
Miracle trailed by 3 points (17-14) after the opening ten minutes and 33-27 at the halftime break but couldn’t keep up in the second half as Acinbaai Takpinyi forced his will around the basket en route a huge double-double of 27 points and 28 rebounds.
Abdul Akim (14) and Erjok Agot (13) scored in double digits for Miracle.
Game 2 of the series will be played today (Sunday, January 5) at KIU and YMCA.
