Last season, JT Lady Jaguars competed fairly well against eventual champions JKL Lady Dolphins in the National Basketball League Playoff Semifinals.
However, during the 3-1 series defeat, it was abundantly clear that the Lady Jaguars were short-handed at the point with Rhoda Nagitta having no capable helper. Ruth Letaru, a rusher, and Maimuna Nabbosa who had turned into a reliable wing were tasked with directing traffic against seasoned guards.
At least for the 2025 season, head coach Sudi Ulanga will not have a similar problem as the club officially announced the signing of former UCU Lady Canons point guard Shakirah Nanvubya.
“I was looking for a place where I’m needed and [feel] comfortable. I was looking for a club that had the same arrangement or the same culture as UCU, which is of course Jaguars,” Nanvubya said of his move to the Kira-based side.
During the course of last season, Nanvubya was heavily linked with a move to the Lady Dolphins but the star guard further explained her decision to join Jaguars.
“To keep the competition going and the fans of course enjoying the game [of basketball], I think [JT] was a better option.
“I’m looking forward to winning another championship and going to a club that has the same energy and hung to win it, we match in ambition and I am going to take the challenge on.”
In pursuit of their first championship, the Lady Jaguars have also strengthened their wing with the addition of Aziida Nabayunga.
Strong on the drive with an occasional outside shot, Nabayunga gives Ulanga some opulence on the wing.
“It’s all about growth. [The culture here] is the same as UCU culture… growth, working hard and everything. I feel this is a better place for me,” says Nabayunga.
“I feel like I’m going to work harder, I feel like we have to win… we have a winning mentality so expect a lot from us, no one loves losing.”
The Lady Jaguars will be competing in the top-flight league only for the third season but the ambition is clear with their cards on the table.
