2027 AFCON preparations: Hoima City stadium construction garners momentum

It is good news from Hoima city as the second largest national stadium in Uganda is steadily taking shape.

The construction is being conducted by Turkish construction firm Summa at an impressively furious pace.

This is one of the stadia that Uganda submitted in the hosting for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, alongside the main Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Upon the third inspection of the project on Saturday, 11th January 2024, the members were very impressed by the developments.

National Council of Sports (NCS) assistant general secretary (administration) Joseph Oluga led the lead joined by the engineering officer Nicholas Zirimenya, the supervisory consultants from the Ministry of Works and Transport.

For starters, SUMMA was handed the project that is estimated at $129 in a period of 18 months.

This is a multi-sports complex that will host football, athletics, netball, volleyball, tennis and a cross section of indoor sports.

The main all seater stadium should be able to accommodate at least 20,000 seaters, alongside a 2000 seater indoor multi-sports arena, a training pitch, a semi-Olympic sized swimming pool, a 1000 plus vehicle parking lot, outdoor courts for basketball, netball and volleyball.

Hoima city stadium is envisaged to be Uganda’s second host city for the 2027 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that will be co-hosted by the three East African countries; Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

As a precursor to the 2027 do, the trio of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania shall host the belated 2024 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament in February 2025 (1st to 28th February).

The establishment of sports amenities underscores Government’s interest in developing sports since the element of facilities remains core in the organic growth of talents.

Uganda has abundant land to establish and develop sports facilities in almost every corner.

In the pipeline, there are deliberate plans to further develop the countryside regional stadia in Mbale, Lira, Mbarara, Masaka and Jinja, among others.
