Ascot tips

• MARES’ HURDLE
  1.40: Kargese 4/6 (2pts)

Kargese

There could be two huge odds-on favourites winning the big races at Ascot this weekend and it would be no surprise.

Kargese has shown she’s a top-class mare, trained by Willie Mullins and has not only gone close to Sir Gino but also Majborough in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival.

She’s a clear Grade 1 hurdler even amongst the horses and geldings so should find this comfortable.

Martator

It’s still early in the week with a few withdrawals likely from this handicap chase, but Martator appeals the most.

He could well be the top-weight if he does go to this race but given he’s already 4/1, would stand a great chance of still making all as he’s shown his class already, including at Ascot.

Beating Kotmask by 11 lengths the last time he was in a Class 2 handicap chase, here and is clearly suited to 2m5f as he won by seven lengths to Outlaw Peter last April at Sandown.

Jonbon

Jonbon is the clear favourite and should be too, as the Nicky Henderson-trained horse has won both of his outings this season taking his tally of chase wins to 11 out of a possible 13.

You cannot fault his consistency having only ever been beaten over fences by a neck to Elixir De Nutz and El Fabiolo.

His jumping has seen some improvements this season and all round looks a much tougher horse to beat.

He could take on the 11-year-old Energumene who was of course involved in the best Clarence House Chase in 2022 when second to Shishkin as the pair battled it out all the way down the straight.

Edwardstone, Boothill, Libberty Hunter and Unexpected Party are all bigger prices and not quite expected to do too much for the minor places.

Jonbon and co will be keen to win this after just missing out on it last year at Cheltenham as last year’s and 2023’s were initially abandoned at Ascot and instead raced later on in the month within the Trials weekend.

Jonbon will be looking to make this Henderson’s third Clarence House in seven years and has the makings of a big winner.
