“KCCA FC loses the match by forfeiture and consequently Mbarara City FC is awarded three points and three goals” read the verdict from the FUFA Disciplinary panel released on Wednesday, 15th January 2025.

This is a ruling not for the faint hearted, one that will leave visible footmarks in the history of Uganda’s football.

One that sets a bold precedent and will leave lasting impression in domestic football.

This follows a case filed by Mbarara City Football Club accusing KCCA of fielding defender Gavin Kizito Mugweri who had accumulated three yellow cards.

“The FUFA disciplinary panel has sanctioned KCCA FC for violating the FUFA competitions rules and regulations when they fielded an ineligible player Gavin Kizito Mugweri during their Uganda Premier League (UPL) against Mbarara City FC at Kakyeka stadium on 7th January 2025” the verdict rule in part.

With 13 Uganda Premier League trophies and 10 Uganda Cup titles to their name since the founding year 1963, KCCA find themselves in a catch 21 situation given the fact that they now lie 10 points adrift from the leaders Vipers.

Mbarara City team manager Mathias Atukunda describes the ruling as a turn-around of fortunes and victory for Uganda’s football.

“There is transparency and fairness. Football in Uganda has won. I salute FUFA for the fairness and wise ruling” Atukunda remarked.

Mbarara City is delighted for the news in equal measure as they attain three points that elevate them to 17 points, same as UPDF.

Meanwhile, the ruling also affected FIFA Referee William Oloya who is suspended for six months for failure to record the cautions against Kizito and KCCA goalkeeper Anthony Emojong Okimaru.

Will KCCA appeal the decision?
