How much is a Victor Wembanyama jersey worth?
Well, one family, who received a Wemby jersey in a heart-warming moment, believe they know the answer after deciding to auction the kit.
Wembanyama and a young fan went viral after they swapped jerseys post-game in a video that would have many fans in awe.
After a 96-87 win over the Brooklyn Nets in December, the stars were lined up to swap shirts with the 7-foot-three giant.
Although it was a young child that would be chosen after the kid, who was outfitted in a youth-sized Wembanyma shirt, held a sign that read “Victor Wembanyama, will you swap jerseys with me?”
The Frenchman took notice and completed an infamous jersey swap with the child, who just reached Wemby’s thigh, standing pround with his match-worn Wembanyama City Edition jersey.
Now, just weeks later, the prized jersey has been put for sale with Wembanyama’s kit being listed for over $10,000 at a minimum with an auction set to take place.
The jersey, listed on website Goldin, is set to be auctioned on the 23rd of January.
When news broke of the auction, fans online were quick to react with many citing that a heart-warming moment has been ruined by the sale.
“Terrible. That’s why many athletes and celebrities aren’t as nice as they want to be,” one fan wrote.
“This is exactly why players stopped signing autographs without getting paid.” another added.
Many also claimed that such a jersey is too invaluable to sell as such a memory should be prized considering where Wembanyama could go in his career.
“0% chance I’m selling that jersey if that’s my kid. That’s a memory unlike many he’ll have in life. Times are tough but I wouldn’t sell it,” one fan said.
“I understand they can do whatever they want with it, but I don’t like that. I would keep that jersey forever; I don’t care how much it sells for,” a fan wrote on X.
Others, though, suggested a sale would set the family, and the child in particular, for life.
“I mean, properly invested the proceeds of that sale could pay for a nice portion of that kids college when he’s an adult,” another said.
One more added: “Hell yes. Pay for the kids college.”
The Frenchman is no stranger to big sums being made from his jerseys, it was only in November 2023 when his debut shirt was also auctioned.
After estimates of $80,000-$120,000, the jersey went on to sell for a staggering $762,000.
The all-time record for a rookie uniform is $3.69million, spent in May 2021 on a Kobe Bryant jersey.
At just 21 years of age, it looks like there will be many more millions that will be made from Wembanyama’s kits.
