Uganda shines at 2025 East Africa Junior Chess championship in Mombasa

7th Light House East Africa Junior Championship:

Best Teams

  • 1.Victoria Chess Club, Kisumu (Kenya)
  • 2. Light House Uganda (Uganda)
  • 3. Great Thinkers Chess Academy (Uganda)

The seventh edition of the Light House East Africa Junior Championship was successfully held in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa.

Uganda has a great representation of junior players from three different clubs; Light House Uganda, Great Thinkers Chess Academy and KTLC. In total Uganda registered as many as 11 medals.

Light House Uganda chess club medalists included; Talia Atubet (U10 Gold), Aine Atubet (U12 Gold), Tandeka Shiloh (U18 Gold) and Jethro Mawejje (U12 Bronze).

 Great Thinkers had Caroline Mirembe (U18 girls’ gold), Manzi Munanukye (U16 boys silver), Ruth Thelma Lukanga Muganzi (U14 girls silver), Esa Shontel (U8 girls silver), Julian Wanyama (U8 bronze) and Prince Dave Amuriat (U8 silver).

KTLC had a gold medal in U-14 for Ronald Wabwire.

Victoria Chess Club from Kisumu (Kenya) was the overall at this tournament.

They were followed by Light House Uganda and another Ugandan side, Great Thinkers Chess Academy followed suit.

His Excellency Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, the Consul General of Uganda in Mombasa was the chief guest at this tournament organized by Light House chess club, Mombasa.

Judith Karigu Mwashe was the Tournament Director (TD).

For starters, Mwashe is also the founder and patron for Lighthouse Chess Club Mombasa.
