Brest vs Real Madrid predictions
It is fair to say Real Madrid have not had everything their own way in the Champions League so far this season.
If anyone at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu expected the holders, now with Kylian Mbappe in their ranks, to breeze through to the round of 16, they have had a rude awakening over the last few months.
Heading into the final set of fixtures in the league phase, Madrid are down in 16th place in the 36-team standings. They have beaten Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta and Red Bull Salzburg, but defeats by Lille, AC Milan and Liverpool have left them in a disappointing position.
There are three different ways it can turn out for the Blancos from here.
First and worst, Madrid could be unseeded in the play-offs. That is a fate that awaits the teams finishing between 17th and 24th.
Alternatively, ending the league phase between ninth and 16th would see Madrid seeded in the play-offs. In the best-case scenario, Carlo Ancelotti’s side would advance directly to the round of 16 by finishing in the top eight.
Needless to say, that is what Madrid are hoping for. They would probably be favourites in the play-offs regardless of who they face, but that is a chance no one wants to take.
On top of that, Ancelotti could do without an extra two matches in February as his team battles Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for the La Liga title.
Is a top-eight finish likely? Madrid are a point behind Bayer Leverkusen, who occupy the final guaranteed last-16 berth.
A win here would potentially be sufficient for the Blancos to climb up eight places, but that depends on how numerous other results go. Anything less than a victory would condemn Madrid to the play-offs.
Remarkably, Brest are actually better off than their upcoming opponents heading into matchday eight. The French outfit are a point ahead of the 15-time kings of the continent, so a top-eight finish remains a possibility for them too.
“I don’t know if there is a Real match that comes at the right time,” Brest manager Eric Roy said in the build-up to the match. “Because I have the impression that they are in great shape, but in any case it comes at a time when we are a little better in the championship.”
Brest vs Real Madrid betting tips
Real Madrid conclude the league phase of the Champions League with a trip to Brest this week.
Real Madrid to win and both teams to score
It took Real Madrid a while to get going both domestically and in Europe this season, but there have been several signs over the last couple of months that Ancelotti’s team have belatedly got their act together.
That is not to say Madrid have been perfect. A 5-2 thrashing by Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup was incredibly deflating for the Blancos.
Free Bet Offers
Yet having been written off in the title race, Madrid are now in top spot in La Liga. And back-to-back wins in the Champions League have ended all talk of a possible exit before the knockout rounds.
Madrid’s superior all-round quality should win the day over in France, but Brest’s attacking efforts may benefit from the fact the pressure is off.
A combo bet of an away victory and goals at both ends is the way to get things rolling.
Tip Real Madrid to win and both teams to score at 7/3 with Tote
Real Madrid to win the second half
Real Madrid have tended to come on strong after the break in their Champions League games up to now.
Ancelotti’s men have conceded six goals in the first half and six goals in the second. The difference is, Madrid have scored just four goals before the interval compared to 13 after it.
We may well see that pattern continue on Wednesday. Brest will be determined to make their mark against Madrid, but given they have already secured a play-off berth, the hosts may fade as the match wears on.
Madrid also have the quality on the bench to take advantage of tiring Brest legs from minutes 45 to 90.

Rodrygo to score any time
Vinicius Junior is suspended for the trip to France, with Arda Guler expected to deputise for the Brazilian.
Rodrygo, another Brazilian, will also feature in the front three alongside Mbappe, who is predictably the favourite in the anytime scorer market.
We recommend going for the former Santos man instead. Despite no longer being a guaranteed pick, Rodrygo has scored 11 goals this season.
He has been particularly productive in recent weeks, making the net ripple eight times in his last nine outings in all competitions.
