Rangers vs Union Saint-Gilloise predictions
Rangers suffered last-gasp heartbreak on matchday seven of the Europa League, as a Bruno Fernandes goal cost them a point against Manchester United.
A 2-1 defeat by Ruben Amorim’s side put a huge dent in Rangers’ hopes of securing a top-eight finish in the new-look league phase. Instead, it looks like the Scottish giants will be involved in the play-offs next month.
Philippe Clement sought to take the positives from his side’s performance at Old Trafford despite the final outcome.
“It is easy to go behind 1-0 to Manchester United and to lose belief when you have so many young players on the pitch who don’t have experience at this level,” he said.
“We kept going and scored a very good goal… but it is a pity we got a sucker punch at the end as the team deserved more and a draw would have been a fair result.”
Rangers sit 13th in the 36-team table ahead of Thursday’s meeting with Union Saint-Gilloise. They are three points behind FCSB in eighth spot, but a three-point lead over Porto in 25th means Rangers are at least guaranteed a play-off berth.
Union Saint-Gilloise are in a similar position. They are level with Rangers on 11 points, but the Belgian outfit have a worse goal difference going into this head-to-head clash.
A victory for either team would see them enter the play-offs as one of the eight seeds, so that is the target for both clubs. A defeat would leave them vulnerable to being unseeded, although we do not yet know how much of a disadvantage that would actually be.
Rangers finished as runners-up in this competition in 2022 and they could do with another deep run this time around.
Their chances of winning the Scottish Premiership title were extinguished early in the campaign after a poor start. They currently trail Celtic by 10 points having played a game more than their arch-rivals.
Clement has so far managed to withstand the heat. A run of one defeat in their last 14 league games has helped, but the Belgian is also under pressure to deliver on the continent given their position back home.
Rangers vs Union Saint-Gilloise betting tips
Rangers and Union Saint-Gilloise both have something to play for on matchday eight of the Champions League.
Rangers to win
Both teams will be without some key players on Thursday night.
Dujon Sterling, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and John Souttar are all on the Rangers treatment table, while Connor Barron, Vaclav Cerny and Leon Balogun are rated as doubtful.
Meanwhile, Union Saint-Gilloise’s list of absentees includes Alessio Castro-Montes, Henok Teklab, Sofiane Boufal, Christian Burgess and Koki Machida.

Rangers and Union are safe in the play-off positions, so the pressure is off both sides to an extent.
Still, the intensity of the Ibrox crowd is likely to make a difference, as it so often does. Rangers have only lost one game at their home ground in 2024/25, so this could ultimately be a disappointing evening for Union.
Back Rangers to win at 24/11 with SBK
Rangers to score first
Union Saint-Gilloise’s Europa League games have been pretty tight and cagey, featuring just 13 goals in total – seven for the Belgians and six for their opponents.
They have often struggled to get going in the opening exchanges, before coming on strong as the match wears on. Indeed, Union have conceded the first goal on four occasions, and have scored the last goal five times.
Fuelled by the raucous noise generated at Ibrox on European nights, Rangers will aim to make a fast start and to get their noses in front early on.
The Gers have scored seven goals between minutes one and 45 in the Europa League, so Clement’s charges have shown themselves to be capable of getting out of the blocks quickly.
The home team have what it takes to draw first blood against Union on matchday eight.
Tip Rangers to score first at 4/6 with bet365
Hamza Igamane to score any time
Hamza Igamane will once again lead the line for Rangers on Thursday and we like his chances of making the net bulge.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Everton in recent days, but even if the Premier League were to put in an official bid for his services, a deal would not be completed before this game against Union Saint-Gilloise.
The Moroccan attacker has scored 13 goals in all competitions for Rangers this season, five of which have come since the turn of the year.
Igamane is in fine form and he should get a fair few opportunities to add to his tally on matchday eight of the Europa League.
