The Uganda Women’s Basketball National Team, the Gazelles, cruised to victory in their opening game of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers, defeating Kenya 78-56.

The Gazelles started strong, establishing a 12-point lead (23-11) by the end of the first quarter.

Despite Kenya’s efforts to fight back, their offensive struggles persisted, and they went into halftime trailing 40-28.

After the break, Uganda extended their lead to 20 points (57-37), setting the stage for a dominant final quarter.

The Gazelles sealed their victory with a commanding 22-point lead, securing their first win of the campaign.

Jane Asinde led Uganda’s scoring with 24 points, followed by Paige Robinson with 15 and Shakira Nanvubya with 14.

Nicholas Natuhereza’s side looked decent both on defence and offence and the victory will give them a positive momentum going forward.

The Gazelles will return to action on Tuesday when they face tournament hosts Egypt.

Uganda is vying for one spot to qualify for the final tournament that will take place in Ivory Coast.

The Gazelles’ roster will be boosted by the arrival of Jamila Nansikombi and Mellisa Akullu who missed the opening game of the campaign.
