Kawowo Sports can exclusively report that Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has sought the services of two consultant coaches for the Uganda Rugby Cranes and Uganda Women’s 7s national teams.

Bronson Weir and Nollis Marais, both South African nationals, will be attached to the Lady Rugby Cranes 7s and the Rugby Cranes respectively from February.

Weir already got to work in Uganda. He held his first training session with the Lady Rugby Cranes 7s on Tuesday morning at Kyadondo Rugby Club. Marais is yet to arrive.

Who are Bronson Weir and Nollis Marais?

Bronson Weir’s last job was as head coach of the Burkina Faso men’s 7s and XVs national teams. He was in the technical area during the 2024 Africa 7s in Mauritius and the Africa Cup at Namboole. He has also coached and/or consulted within South Africa Rugby Union structures and the Nigeria & Kenya national team setups.

This will not be Weir’s first engagement with Uganda. He held similar roles in the early to mid-2010s with the men’s senior 7s and the U-19 Rugby Cranes during different tournaments such as the Rugby World Cup 7s, the Commonwealth Games, and the Rugby Africa (then-CAR) Cup.

Marais’ fifteen-year coaching career has been mainly within the Blue Bulls Rugby Franchise in Pretoria, South Africa. He has coached the University of Pretoria’s UP Tuks, Blue Bulls U-21, and the professional men’s Blue Bulls in Super Rugby.

URU will make these appointments public soon.
