Plymouth Argyle vs Liverpool predictions

It is easy to take Liverpool’s magnificent form for granted, but it is worth reflecting on the extent to which they are exceeding expectations this season.

Jurgen Klopp remodelled the entire club in his image during his successful nine-year tenure at Anfield. When the charismatic German announced he was stepping down at the end of last term, almost everyone expected a transition period lasting one or two years.

Instead, Arne Slot has managed to make Liverpool competitive on several fronts in his maiden campaign at the helm.

It is not just that Liverpool are six points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand on the chasing pack.

They also finished top of the Champions League league phase to advance directly to the round of 16. Back at home, they are through to the EFL Cup final and the bookies have them down as second-favourites to win the FA Cup, behind Manchester City (a surprising decision given the latter’s struggles in recent months).

A word of caution, though. Despite Liverpool’s favourable position in multiple competitions, they have not won anything yet.

Arsenal are showing admirable resilience in the title race. A 14-game unbeaten streak has kept them in the hunt, even though it would be tough to overturn a nine-point deficit.

There are several other strong sides still in the Champions League, while on their day Newcastle United are capable of going toe to toe with Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. As for the FA Cup, the likes of City, Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa also have designs on the trophy.

Still, not even the most optimistic member of the Liverpool fan base could have expected the club to be in such a strong position with around three and a half months of the season remaining.

There will doubtless soon be talk of a potential quadruple, although history shows how difficult it is to claim all four trophies. If they had to sacrifice one, it would probably be this one. The FA Cup is more prestigious than the EFL Cup, but Liverpool are only one victory away from scooping the latter.

Slot is likely to shuffle his pack for this clash with Plymouth Argyle, but even a second-string side would surely have too much quality for Liverpool’s fourth-round opponents.

Plymouth Argyle vs Liverpool betting tips

The fourth round of the FA Cup features Plymouth Argyle vs Liverpool at Home Park.

Liverpool -2.5 Asian handicap

Plymouth Argyle’s priority for the remainder of the season is surviving in the Championship. They are rooted to the foot of the table at present, with a four-point gap to Hull City in 21st.

Miron Muslic was appointed as Wayne Rooney’s replacement last month and he oversaw a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion last time out, but there is still a long way to go for the Pilgrims.

Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool is arguably a welcome distraction. No one expects Plymouth to go through, so they can play with a degree of freedom against the Premier League leaders.

Overall, though, it is hard to see how the Championship’s lowest-ranked side will be able to cope with the best team in Europe right now.

All things considered, Liverpool should win this one pretty comfortably.

Liverpool to win both halves

Managing a squad over the course of a jam-packed season is a crucial part of a head coach’s job these days.

The games come thick and fast at this stage of a campaign and Slot will not want his star men to be burned out come May.

While he is unlikely to name a reserve team at Home Park, it would be just as surprising if the Liverpool manager picked his strongest XI against the Championship struggles.

Plymouth could also rest a few of their regular starters with an eye on Wednesday’s crunch clash with Millwall.

Either way, Liverpool will look to assert their dominance from the get-go.

Darwin Nunez to score any time

When Liverpool splashed out £85m on Darwin Nunez in the summer of 2022, they did not expect him to be a rotation option two and a half years later.

That is what Nunez has become, however, with Slot preferring to deploy Luis Diaz through the middle.

The Uruguay international faces an uncertain future at Anfield, but he still has an important role to play between now and the end of the season, whether it is by impacting games off the bench or seizing his opportunity in cup games.

Nunez is likely to start against Plymouth Argyle, whose defence will struggle to keep the lively striker quiet.
