Scottie Scheffler showed a different side to his personality after losing his cool at the Phoenix Open.

The world No.1 is renowned for his largely composed personality – a trait that has undoubtedly helped him to reach the summit of the sport.

But that wasn’t the case in Phoenix.

In the third round of the competition, Scheffler was two-under for the round at the midway point.

But after a disappointing effort on the 15th hole, the American let his frustration boil over.

Approaching his bag, Scheffler struck it with his club in a rare display of anger.

The swing knocked it to the ground and stunning spectators both on the ground and at home.

The 28-year-old went on to bogey the hole.

And golf fans expressed their displeasure at his conduct, despite it coming at the Phoenix Open, which is renowned for its rowdy nature.

Taking to social media, one fan said: “That’s not very professional.”

Another wrote: “This is poor from Scottie.”

A third fan wrote: “Poor guy can’t handle it when he’s not winning, bless him.”

One fan even joked that ‘jail time has changed him’, having seen him arrested during the 2024 PGA Championship.

He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, a class-C felony, and three misdemeanors: third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic but these were eventually dropped and in the incident was regarded as a ‘big misunderstanding’.

Despite the setback, he did recover well for two birdies in a row at the 17th and 18th holes.

This ensured that he finished day 3 with a total score of 10 under par and T10 on the leaderboard.

It leaves him eight strokes off the leader, Detry, while also being three strokes from T2.

This year, Scheffler is looking to beat last year’s impressive haul of even tournament wins, with the best coming in the Masters.

He also topped the money list for the third year in a row as he continues to be the most dominant figure on courses across the globe.
