The Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is looking to lead the Chiefs to a historic three-peat, while Jalen Hurts will hope to bring the Vince Lombardi Trophy back to Philly for just the second time.

Historically, the Super Bowl is won and lost by those under center.

Since the game’s MVP award was first presented way back in 1967, quarterbacks have won it 33 times.

Behind them, wide receivers have won the award in eight different years, and running backs in seven.

This year, both Mahomes and Hurts have a brilliant supporting cast around them, with the likes of Travis Kelce and Saquon Barkley expected to be big factors.

But on the night, the Super Bowl usually comes down to which QB can perform best when it matters most.

That’s why, perhaps, they are paid so much money.

Chiefs star Mahomes is on a 10 year, $450million contract that he signed back in 2020.

Hurts, meanwhile, is on a five year, $255m deal in Philadelphia that he secured in 2023.

Combined, their contracts are worth a massive $705m.

According to NFL Research, that is the highest combined value of two opposing quarterbacks in Super Bowl history.

The second highest total between two QBs is $500m, which came in Super Bowl LV four years ago.

Even then, $450m of that figure came from Mahomes, and the other $50m came from Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With a combined value of $705m, Mahomes and Hurts will make history the moment they step out on the field in New Orleans.

And Kansas City’s QB will hope that’s only the beginning.

Much of the discussion around Super Bowl LIX has been about the Chiefs chasing a three-peat – or three-straight championships.

That has never been done in the Super Bowl era, and if Mahomes can lead his team to victory, it will further cement their dynasty.

In fact, according to his teammate Justin Reid, it could make them the greatest team of all time.

“To be put on the Mount Rushmore of greatest teams across any sport, ever, it’s a tremendous opportunity to do something that’s never been done before,” the safety said this week.

“It’s something the whole city will be proud of and remember for the rest of their lives.”

While Mahomes and his teammates will be out to make history, Hurts, of course, will be looking to play spoiler.
