Luke Humphries recorded one of the highest unofficial darts averages in history but remarkably was thrashed by Gerwyn Price.

Humphries and Price faced off in an untelevised exhibition event in Ireland on Saturday and both were in blistering form with the tungsten.

The man dubbed ‘Cool Hand’ finished with a staggering average of 119.88, while Price averaged 118.64.

Humphries also hit four 180s to Price’s three.

Had the match been televised, Humphries’ average would have been the fourth-highest ever recorded behind only Michael van Gerwen, who enjoyed a mind-blowing average of 123.40 against Michael Smith during their Premier League encounter in 2016.

As for Price, his average would have become the sixth-highest in history.

Together, Humphries and Price’s combined average of 238.52 would have shattered the official record which belongs to Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis as they joined together for an average of 228.65 in 2017.

Ultimately, there was only one statistic that mattered most: the scoreboard.

Rather shockingly, it was not in favour of Humphries as Price emerged with a 6-1 victory.

Responding to a post on X where someone shared their staggering stats, Humphries said: “Jammy b****r he was… Didn’t miss a double!! Has to be the highest ever recorded losing average over a best of 11 in history! And got bashed hahahaha.”

However, the loss will be the least of Humphries’ worries given he picked up two major victories in the space of a week.

Humphries secured his first piece of silverware this year at the World Masters as he overcame Jonny Clayton 6-5 in the final.

Humphries’ finishing was evidently not on song against Price[/caption]

It was a nervy performance from the 2024 world champion given he led 5-2, only for Clayton to return fire and level things up at 5-5.

But Humphries regained composure to pull clear and win the deciding set 6-5 to land his seventh major PDC title and a cool £100,000 in prize money.

Speaking after the win, Humphries conceded he was ‘fortunate’ to take home the title after he ‘started to feel the nerves.’

“When I was 5-2 up and missing doubles, I was trying too hard,” Humphries said.

“As soon as it went 5-5, I thought the game maybe had gone for me. Jonny was scoring so well. It was a really tough game. I played well in patches but Jonny was dominant at times.

“To win trophies like these is amazing and to share a stage with Jonny is a privilege. I am over the moon.”

The loss to Price did little to take away from a magical few days for Humphries[/caption]

Humphries maintained his form at the first night of this year’s Premier League in Belfast.

He beat Nathan Aspinall and Van Gerwen on his way to the final, where he came up against full-time Premier League debutant Chris Dobey.

But the Geordie talent was simply no match for Humphries as ‘Cool Hand’ recorded a dominant 6-1 win.

Humphries will look to keep the momentum rolling at the Players Championship in Wigan, which kicks off on Monday.
