Thomas Detry has become the first ever Belgian to win on the PGA Tour as he cruised to the Phoenix Open title.

The 32-year-old, ranked 58th overall in the PGA rankings, fended off stiff competition with a final score of -24.

American duo Michael Kim and Daniel Berger came joint second on 17 under, while Jordan Spieth came fourth on 16 under.

He also saw off Justin Thomas, who was left in awe at a sensational shot by Detry on the 16th.

Detry had a three-shot lead over Berger going into the stadium hole and sensationally stuffed it to within two feet amid a hostile atmosphere.

“It’s hard to put into words how impressive that shot is,” Thomas said.

The comments came after Thomas made history himself by becoming the first player in Phoenix Open history to eagle the 18th hole in the final round.

Finished joint sixth with Scotland’s Robert MacIntrye on 15 under.

Detry’s triumph will also do his chances of being named in Team Europe’s Ryder Cup squad no harm with the showcase event to be held at the revered Black Course at Bethpage State Park, on Long Island, New York.

Recent tournaments are good signs for Europe with Rory McIlroy winning the Pebble Beach ProAm last week, while Sepp Straka won the American Express in January.
