I’m willing to try anything within reason to get the most out of my performance and recovery.

I’ve had protein shakes and pre-workouts aplenty, but I’ve never considered the answer to a good workout or recovery might be in tea.

Mission is a London-based tea company that produces drinks that are said to help with physical and mental well-being.

Fuelling the Liverpool, Aston Villa, Brighton and Hove Albion football teams, the England Rugby squad and even racers in the Formula 1, the science-led teas use several holistic ingredients to aid performance and recovery without impacting flavour.

I got my hands on the Perform Tea and Recover Tea products, and put them to the test to see if these teas could actually make a positive impact.

Keep reading to see just exactly how I got on…

How I tested Mission Drinks

I used the Perform Tea and Recover Tea before and after my workouts for a week to see if they helped me during training and for the recovery afterwards.

Before either a session in the weight room or a ride on my Zwift, I consumed a Perform Tea about an hour before and a Recover Tea almost straight afterwards.

Noting the taste, ease of use, performance benefits and value for money, I ranked each tea out of five to determine if Mission Drinks are worth it.

Pros:

  • Nice herbal taste
  • Very simple to prepare
  • Organic ingredients
  • Science-backed recipes
  • Sustained energy from Perform Tea
  • Recover Tea helped with lactic acid build-up

Cons:

  • Tea bags have to be kept and reused
  • Not sold on the cognitive benefits
  • Unsure if it helps repair muscles

Overall Rating: 4/5

After reading Mission Drink’s lengthy list of testimonials online, I was keen to put things to the test.

I got my hands on two of the brand’s most popular products: The Perform Tea and the Recover Tea.

Straight away I was impressed by the premium look and feel of the packaging.

Included in each pouch, there was a total of 30 tea bags which surprisingly offered 90 servings.

Each pouch is made to be reused a total of three times, which is great until you realise that means keeping them somewhere in your kitchen.

I started my test with the Perform Tea, which is designed to be drunk before and during performance.

Before either cycling or a session in the weight room, I consumed a cup of Perform Tea.

It didn’t give me the same buzz that my usual espresso would, but it did give me prolonged energy for a few hours to come.

I wasn’t sold on the mental performance benefits, but I am aware nootropics tend to take a while to work.

With a tasty green tea foundation, this tea was a pleasure to drink.

Sadly, the Recover Tea wasn’t quite as pleasant, and I found it quite difficult to drink after a tough workout.

With that said, I found the positives to outweigh the negatives as I reaped the recovery benefits.

Any lactic acid after a tough workout seemed to disappear a lot quicker, and I found the transition from working out to winding down so much easier.

Pros:

  • Nice herbal taste
  • Offers sustained energy
  • Organic and healthy
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Not convinced about the cognitive benefits
  • You have to reuse the tea bags
  • Doesn’t offer immediate energy

Rating: 4/5

My testing began with Mission’s Perform Tea, a blend designed to help with physical and mental performance.

Arriving in premium packaging, you get a total of 30 teabags, which is enough for 90 servings.

Making up to three drinks per teabag, I was a bit baffled to discover I’d have to leave them deteriorating on my worktop until I decided to use them next.

You can drink them hot or cold and I opted for the latter since that’s what felt more natural in my mind.

From a taste perspective, the Chinese Sencha Green Tea aspect was very prominent, and as a whole, this blend just reminded me of a nice herbal tea.

I didn’t notice an immediate boost of energy, but I did seem to benefit from a sustained boost of vigour throughout the day.

According to the Perform Tea’s ingredients, this is because of the mix of caffeine and glycogen included.

I’m a frequent espresso drinker, so it did take a little bit of getting used to the fact that the energy wasn’t immediate.

However, I did find that I didn’t suffer the same kind of energy dips as I would during one of my longer workouts.

Spearmint and gotu kola ingredients are said to offer boosts to cognitive performance and mental acuity, but frankly, I’m not convinced.

Having suffered writer’s block just before drinking the tea, I was hoping these nootropics would set me straight, but I didn’t really feel any kind of benefit in that regard.

So would I use Mission’s Perform Tea again? Yes, but I’d use it first thing in the morning for some sustained energy.

For workout and brain fuel, I’ll likely stick to my espressos from here on out.

Mission Recover Tea full review

The Recover Tea is ideal for post-workout recovery

Pros:

  • Offers your daily amount of Ashwagandha
  • Lowers stress hormones
  • Reduces inflammation

Cons:

  • Wasn’t keen on the taste
  • Not sure how it can directly help muscle recovery

Rating: 4/5

Sometime after finishing my workouts, I reached for the Mission Recover Tea.

Sporting a deep red hue, this tea contains the rooibos plant, an ingredient that’s said to have some pretty impressive anti-inflammatory and anti-stress properties.

From a taste perspective, this particular blend had smoky and sweet flavours and certainly had a bit more of a kick to it.

I did struggle somewhat to get this particular blend down after an intensive workout. This was largely due to the odd aftertaste.

After experiencing the same workout with and without the Recover Tea consumed, I noticed that any lactic acid build-up I had seemed to disappear a little bit quicker, and overall, I felt more relaxed.

The transition between my body being prepped for working out versus a state of rest seemed a lot shorter, and I found this helpful considering I prefer to workout in the evenings.

I wasn’t entirely sold on the “muscle repair” benefits of this tea given that it contains a trace amount of both protein and carbohydrates.

But I can understand that the reduced stress on the body might help prevent injuries.

As for the Ashwagandha, I’m not entirely sure I’ll see any benefit in the long term seeing as I’m a daily user already.

But, I can see this being beneficial to the large majority who don’t take it.

I’d consider drinking the Recover Tea again but I’d personally I’d have to find a way to make the taste a little bit more bearable for my palette.

Mission Drinks review: My verdict

Mission’s teas can be consumed either hot or cold

After spending over a week with Mission Drinks, I can see why so many turn to them for help with performance and recovery.

From the Perform Tea, I experienced a slow release of energy for a few hours after consuming which helped me with my workouts.

I wasn’t exactly convinced by the cognitive benefits, but perhaps the nootropics need an extended period of time to work.

As for the Recover Tea, I found this tea helped to alleviate the stiffness from lactic acid build-up and I found it a lot easier to wind-down after an intensive workout.

I would likely try both teas again in the future, but I’d like to test them for more of an extended stint to see if I can benefit from the mental uses.
