Crested Cranes defender Shadia Nankya has officially joined National Women Super League (NWSL) outfit Washington Spirit.

As earlier reported by Kawowo Sports, the tall defender joins the club on a two-year deal but with an option to extend.

“The Washington Spirit has signed Ugandan defender Shadia Nankya to a two-year contract with 2027 and 2028 team options in a transfer from Egypt’s FC Masar, the clubs announced today. The move involved a transfer fee paid to FC Masar by the Spirit.” The club confirmed.

She becomes the first Ugandan to break into arguably the best Women Football League in the world.

Nankya could not hide her delight about the opportunity and believes this is a great step in her career.

“I feel so excited and I can’t wait to start off. I am 100% ready, to embrace the challenge, make new friends in the game on and off the field,” she stated.

The defender is also thankful to her agency, Sepuya Inc Agency that have been able to see the deal over the line.

“I want to thank my agent for making sure this deal materializes. I believe this is a good opportunity for me to perform at such a great club and playing in such a competitive league.”

Director James Hocken indicated Nankya has shown great potential throughout her young professional career, especially her time in Egypt.

“We expect her to be an important contributor to the Spirit throughout her tenure at the club. We have monitored her progress and we believe she is a good addition to our team.” He said.

Nankya has previously featured for FC Masar in Egypt, UCU Lady Cardinals and Uganda Marytrs Lubaga WFC in Uganda.
