‘No way I’d move him’ – Kurt Warner blasts Rams for putting Matthew Stafford in tense trade rumors

Matthew Stafford proved during the NFL playoffs that he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner, who won a Super Bowl with the Rams’ franchise, has serious questions about how his old team is handling Stafford’s future.

“If you want to win as a team, then you don’t get rid of guys like that,” Warner exclusively told talkSPORT.

The 37-year-old Stafford almost led the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl.

The Rams trailed the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles 16-15 in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship, and were within 13 yards of a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds on the road.

But while the Eagles went on to win it all, for the Rams, that defeat has been followed by the team pushing to trade former NFL Offensive Player of the Year Cooper Kupp.

“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships,” Kupp posted on social media before the Eagles beat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

“I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA.”

Kupp’s public frustration with the Rams was then followed with growing rumors that Los Angeles is also planning to move on from Stafford, who completed 65.8 percent of his passes last season for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 93.7 rating.

Warner made it clear during his interview with talkSPORT that he’s a big Stafford supporter, and doesn’t understand what the Rams are doing with a trusted QB who won the Super Bowl just three years ago.

“I think so much of decisions like that become do you feel that your team can be competitive for the next couple of years?” Warner said.

“Matt, he’s a top-five, top-seven quarterback in the league at this point, no matter where you want to stack him up.

“It sounds like they want to make a trade for Cooper. Do they feel like they’re not in that window? But I look at this team and what they did this year, and they took the Eagles to the end with a chance to win.

“They got a great young defense. Puka Nacua is unbelievable. Matthew’s playing at a tremendous level … I know he wants to play a couple more years.

“If I’m the Rams and I believe my window to win is right now, there’s no way I would even think about moving him.”

Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, is due to make $49 million this year.

The former Georgia star has earned more than $360 million during his 16-year career, which featured 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Rams defensive end Kobie Turner echoed Warner’s strong words about Stafford’s future in Los Angeles.

“Nine is my quarterback,” Turner exclusively told talkSPORT, referencing Stafford’s jersey number.

“If we go a different direction, then obviously we’ll pivot. But at the end of the day, Matthew Stafford is my quarterback.

“I trust him. There’s nobody else that I’d rather go into one of those situations where you really need the quarterback to step up and lead a drive than Matthew Stafford.

“I think he loves being a Ram and the Rams definitely love having him. And we as a team, we rally behind him.”

With the start of NFL free agency less than a month away, the Rams have a huge decision to make that could affect the franchise for years to come.

Stafford wants to stay in Los Angeles, while a respected Rams Hall of Famer and current starting defender want the same.

Whether the Rams do is a question that has only grown louder since the Super Bowl.

“My husband wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation,” Stafford’s wife, Kelly, said on the ‘Morning After’ podcast.

“The trading away of Cooper … I’m confused, because we were one play away from going to the NFC Championship. And I think if we go, we win.”
