Onyango’s Sundowns to face Tunisia’s Esperance in CAF CL quarter finals

The CAF Champions League quarter final draw has been held with former winners Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance paired together.

The draw, held in Doha, Qatar saw three more exciting fixtures that will include Egypt’s giants and defending champions Al Ahly face Sudan’s Al Hilal.

The record holders finished second in their group but are still fancied to go all the way to the final and try to win an unprecedented third title in a row.

Despite playing their matches away in Mauritania due to the civil war in Sudan, Al Hilal, managed by Florent Ibenge topped their group and will give their opponents a tough task over two legs.

The third quarter final will see another Egyptian side Pyramids FC take on Moroccan side AS FAR in what promises to be another thriller as the Egyptian side scored the most goals (14) in the group stages while AS FAR went unbeaten through the initial stages.

Elsewhere, Algeria giants MC Alger who conceded just two goals during the group stage, take on South Africa’s Orlando Pirates who topped a group that had Al Ahly.

The 1995 winners have not reached the last four of the competition since 2013 when they finished runners-up.

Following the quarter-final draw, the semi-final line-up was also determined.

The winner of the clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance will face either Al Ahly or Al Hilal. Meanwhile, the victor between MC Alger and Orlando Pirates will meet the winner of the Pyramids versus AS FAR tie.

All quarter-final matches will be played over two legs, with the first leg scheduled for 1 April and the return leg a week later on 8 April.

The semi-finals will follow a similar format, with the winners advancing to the prestigious final in June.
