England kick off their Champions Trophy tournament his weekend with what will probably be their most difficult game of their three group stage matches – against reigning world champions Australia.
This competition will be the first major ICC event since Brendon McCullum took over white ball coaching duties for England at the start of the year after Matthew Mott’s departure following defeat in last year’s T20 World Cup semi final.
The New Zealander, who has been England’s Test coach since 2022, has lost seven of his first eight matches as head coach across both white ball formats, and is currently 0-3 in the ODI format following the recently concluded tour of India.

Australia make the trip to Pakistan ahead of the first Champions Trophy since 2017 also in a spot of bad form, losing both ODIs last week against a Sri Lanka side who haven’t qualified for this year’s tournament, having also lost their previous series at home against Pakistan.
Andrew McDonald’s side, particularly, their seam attack has been heavily struck by injuries in the build up to the tournament, with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitch Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and captain Pat Cummins all omitted from the squad.
Despite their injuries the Aussies are still second favourites to go on and lift the trophy in a fortnight’s time, and will be captained by stand in skipper Steve Smith for the duration of the tournament.
The last time these two old rivals met came in an ODI series at the back end of the most recent English summer, in which the Aussies edged a five match series 3-2.
