Arsenal vs West Ham predictions

Arsenal are still fighting in the Premier League title race. Liverpool’s shaky form has kept the door ajar and the Gunners are determined to remain in the mix for as long as possible.

They have not had it easy of late. There was the hamstring injury sustained by Bukayo Saka, who has now been absent for two months.

He has since been joined on the treatment table by Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli, leaving Arsenal worryingly short of attacking players as they aim to hunt down Liverpool.

Then there was the contentious red card shown to Myles Lewis-Skelly against Wolverhampton Wanderers, a setback Arsenal overcame to grind out a 1-0 victory.

There have been negative results in other competitions. Arsenal fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, losing to Manchester United on penalties. They were then knocked out of the EFL Cup at the semi-final stage by Newcastle United.

Yet their Premier League form has been impressive for a while now. Arsenal have not always played dazzling football, but this is a team that knows how to get results.

Mikel Arteta’s men are on a 15-game unbeaten run in the top flight. You have to go back to the start of November to find the last time they were beaten (a 1-0 loss to Newcastle).

Over the last four, eight, 10 and 12 rounds of fixtures, Arsenal have collected more points than any other team in the division. Liverpool got out of the blocks quicker at the beginning of the campaign, but in terms of results Arsenal have been the Premier League’s best team over the last three months.

Liverpool dropped two more points in midweek, drawing 2-2 with Aston Villa. Arsenal play first this weekend, so a win here would see them close the gap to five points. The Reds then face a tricky assignment away at Manchester City on Sunday.

Arsenal should not concern themselves with anyone else’s business, though. Arteta must ensure his players are focused on West Ham and West Ham alone. Arsenal remain title outsiders, but they will hope that the relative lack of pressure works to their advantage.

Arsenal vs West Ham United betting tips

Arsenal will be looking to keep their Premier League title challenge on track this weekend.

Arsenal to win to nil

West Ham have not enjoyed a new manager bounce under Graham Potter.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea head coach oversaw a 3-2 victory over Fulham in his first game in charge, although it must be said that West Ham were outplayed for much of that encounter.

Since then Potter’s team have collected one point from a possible 12. In the process they have dropped all the way down to 16th place.

With so many forwards missing, Arsenal will need to rely on their defence in the coming weeks. Thankfully for Arteta his side has the stingiest backline in the league, in terms of both goals conceded and expected goals against.

Arsenal are one clean sheet away from reaching double figures this term. Against a struggling West Ham side, a 10th shut-out of 2024/25 beckons.

Draw at half-time

It took Arsenal until the 81st minute to make the breakthrough against Leicester City last time out.

Mikel Merino was the unlikely hero, notching a late brace after coming off the bench. A central midfielder by trade, Merino was deployed up front to great effect.

Arteta is likely to start the Spain international in that role against West Ham. But with Saka, Martinelli, Havertz and Jesus all sidelined, it could take Arsenal a while to open the scoring.

West Ham have not exactly been a model of defensive solidity this term. They have kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 league games – and that was against last-placed Southampton.

Even so, there is a decent chance the Hammers will get to half-time with the score still 0-0.

Ethan Nwaneri to score or assist

In an ideal world, Ethan Nwaneri would not be starting Premier League games week in, week out at the age of 17.

If Saka, Martinelli and Jesus were all fit, Nwaneri would be on the bench more often than not. Yet injuries have forced Arteta to call upon the teenager and he has not disappointed.

Merino may have scored Arsenal’s two goals against Leicester, but Nwaneri was the star of the show. In his last four appearances in all competitions, the winger has had a direct hand in three Arsenal goals.

“I just love it, you want to play here, you want to be at that level, you need to play with that courage,” Arteta said of Nwaneri’s display at the King Power Stadium.

Do not be surprised if the Arsenal academy product scores a goal or sets one up against West Ham.
