KOBs v Pirates will answer some early Rugby Cranes questions

KCB KOBs and Stanbic Black Pirates contribute a player to every segment of the Uganda Rugby Cranes playing squad. From the front row to the locks and loose forwards. Through the halfbacks and midfield to the back three. You will find a KOBs or Pirates player, or just them alone at the expense of all other rugby clubs in the world.

KOBs’ Justin Kimono & Joseph Aredo take on Black Pirates’ Ivan Magomu & Jones Kamiza in their last meeting at Legends in the 2024 men’s Championship |

This makes their Round Six meeting in the 2025 men’s Uganda Rugby Premiership more than just a club match. It is also a silent roll call for the Rugby Cranes who have already started preparations for the upcoming men’s Rugby World Cup qualifier (Africa Cup) in July.

  • 4 p.m. EAT – Legends: KOBs v Pirates

Rugby Cranes head coach Fred Mudoola and his new high-performance consultant Nollis Marais were in attendance at Kings Park last week when Pirates took on Heathens.

For similar intents and purposes, one should not be surprised to see them at Legends this Saturday when KOBs host Pirates.

Additionally, their fellow technical bench members — S&C coach Timothy Mudoola of KOBs and assistant (forwards) coach Marvin Odongo of Pirates — will be plotting against each other in this high octane contest.

The Rugby Cranes technical bench will all be on the lookout. To see how those already called up will perform against those knocking at the door. And to identify how best to align the pieces on their chessboard.

For example, at the front row, Collins Kimbowa scrummaging against Alema Ruhweza. The second row has Simon Makumbi and Mike Otto clashing with Frank Kidega and Eliphaz Emong. The loose forwards of Derrick Tukwasiibwe & Andrew Odhiambo and Sydney Gongodyo & Humphrey Tashobya steered by 7s internationals Pius Ogena and Desire Ayera respectively.

KOBs’ promising duo of Stuart Mwayi and Calvin Gizamba will take on Pirates’ been-theres in Stephen Alul & William Nkore.

Ian Munyani and Isaac Massanganzira, who have loads of experience in international 7s, are said to be the solution to Uganda’s midfield woes.

And in the back field, Joseph Aredo patrolling against Timothy Kisiga.

The war between KOBs and Pirates will be won on the scoreboard but the small battles on the pitch are what will matter most for Uganda.
