Formula 1 fans are used to hearing the dulcet tones of Martin Brundle commentating on F1.

But at Bahrain testing British fans got their first taste of listening to his son Alex.

As Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, and Fernando Alonso took to the track in their new cars, Brundle was giving his hot takes on a shared broadcast with F1 TV and Sky Sports.

And fans were happy with his bow, going on social media and sharing plenty of compliments.

Brundle was broadcasting along with Jolyon Palmer and Alex Jacques, and one X user said the trio were ‘putting the regular Sky F1 commentary team to shame’.

He later commented under the same post: “They’re so clear it’s unbelievable.”

Another compliment read: “Some serious commentary about the cars and their behaviour with Alex Brundle. Much prefer that than whether Liam Lawson has got blond highlights in his hair.”

But the majority of posts online were about how similar father and son sounded.

“Alex Brundle sounds just like his dad. It’s uncanny,” one fan posted

Another person said: “I can’t get over how similar Alex Brundle sounds to his dad.

Queried about his son earlier this year, Martin said on Reddit: “I actually think we’re very similar, actually – people confuse us!

“I walk through the paddock and hear some commentary, and I think I don’t remember talking about that and then I realise it’s my son that I can hear booming through the paddock because he does some F1, f2, and F3 television.

“I think we’ve got the same mannerisms and the same quirky statements. So, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree as they say, but he ploughs his own furrow, he’s made his own career and he was great sports car racer. And, he does a lot of historic stuff as well, now.

“So, I’m really proud of him. He does a wonderful job, and he’s just a sort of better educated, more intelligent version of me, really, when he’s commentating. “

Alex has pedigree as a driver with two stints in Formula Two, the series below Formula 1.

He’s also a European Sportscar Champion, a Nurburgring 24 Hours Class Winner, and a two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans podium finisher.

Before a glittering broadcasting career, F1 fans have fond memories of his father Martin, who competed from 1984 to 1996 earning 98 career points and nine podiums.

During his spell in Formula 1, he partnered legendary drivers Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barichello, and Mika Hakkinen.

He also won the World Sportscar Championship in 1988 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988 and 1990, all with Jaguar.

Now Martin is loved for is his commentary which he started in 1997 as part of ITV’s F1 coverage.

He also worked for the BBC and now is contracted to a co-commentary role at Sky.

Brundle’s famous grid walk has seen him interview many big names from the world of sport – and outside it – such as Kylian Mbappe and Stormzy.

Some of those, though, haven’t gone as smoothly as he would have liked.

An infamous run-in with model and actress Cara Delevingne saw her refuse to answer his questions, despite rules stating those on the grid should talk to the Sky Sports pundit if asked.

It led to fans labelling Delevingne rude and demanding a crackdown on VIP passes, despite her claims she was told to say no to him.

Appetite for the new F1 season – it’s historic 75th – is growing with every day, especially as Bahrain testing gets into full swing.

Lewis Hamilton is just over two weeks away from his Ferrari debut since his stunning move from Mercedes.

A deal which saw Hamilton bag £50m with the Italian team.

The Australian Grand Prix on March 14 will be a huge insight on what is to come this season.

But at the age of 40 time is against the Brit to claim another world championship and surpass Michael Schumacher to go top of the all-time title rankings.

Hamilton’s seventh and most recent triumph came in 2020 followed by a 2021 controversial second place, losing out to Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi.
