Sport-S have advanced to the semifinals of the CAVB Zone V Club Championship after beating KAVC in straight sets.

Memory Dube’s charges needed to come from five points down (11-16) in the opening set of the game. They scored unanswered points to lead 23-21 before they edged the opener.

Kathbert Malinga, who had been a target of KAVC from the service box, along with the go-to man Jonathan Tumukunde and Duke Komukama led the fight back into the game.

Dickens Otim got a couple of points to start the second set but KAVC, especially Geoffrey Onapa and Innocent Ayo, continued to find gaps in the Sport-S block and built a 5-point lead (11-6).

As was the case in the opening set, Sport-S again clawed back and took the lead 20-18 forcing KAVC into a time-out that ultimately didn’t change the fate as Sport-S went up 2-0.

Sport-S were never threatened early in the third set but switched off and KAVC quietly rallied back to within a point (19-20) but setter Eddy Kijjambo served in the net to get Sport-S off the hook as they cruised to victory.

Rwanda Police, APR are the other sides that have already qualified for Monday’s semifinals of the tournament.

The last quarterfinal is between REG of Rwanda and Burundi’s Rukinzo Volleyball Club.
