Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid prediction
Real Madrid head into Tuesday night’s European Madrid derby as odds on favourites for victory in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash despite having fallen down to third place in the La Liga table on the weekend following a surprise 2-1 loss at Real Betis.
Defeat for Carlo Ancelotti’s side ended a seven game unbeaten run in all competitions for Los Blancos and saw them lose ground in the battle for the La Liga title race, opening up a three point gap between the defending champions and current leaders Barcelona.
The reigning European champions have won 10 of their 12 league games at the Santiago Bernabeu this season, and have won eight of their last nine home games in all competitions, though the only side to have avoided defeat in that run are Tuesday’s opponents.
Atletico Madrid prepare for the visit to their local rivals with two wins in their last five matches following their 1-0 triumph over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday night, though are unbeaten in their last 10 games in all competitions.
Diego Simeone’s side overtake their local rivals in the La Liga table over the weekend, pushing themselves up to second in the standings where they still trail leaders Barcelona by just a solitary point as they chase a first league title in four years.
Los Rojiblancos have lost only one of their last 26 matches in all competitions ahead of their trip to the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, including just one loss in their last 14 away from home, though have won only two of their last five on the road in all competitions.
There has been nothing to separate the two sides in seven of their last eight meetings over 90 minutes, with the last three matches between the rivals all ending in a 1-1 scoreline, including both from the league earlier this season.
Tuesday’s game can be expected to be a cagey game, particularly with Simeone’s sides known to be enjoy putting men behind the ball in tough away legs in European competition, and with Real Madrid winless in six of their last seven against Atletico, I see another 1-1 draw on the cards on Tuesday.
Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid betting tips
Only three players across Europe’s top five leagues have scored more goals in all competitions than Kylian Mbappe, whose hat trick in his last Champions League game against Manchester City took him to 28 goals for the season, despite a ‘slow’ start to his time at Real Madrid.
Six of the last seven games between the two sides have ended in draws, while each of their last three meetings have finished 1-1.
