Borussia Dortmund struggled for consistency in the Bundesliga last season and ultimately finished fifth.

They reserved their best form for the Champions League, reaching the final and outplaying Real Madrid for long periods of the Wembley Stadium showpiece, only to lose 2-0.

The same dichotomy is present in 2024/25. Dortmund are faring even worse in the Bundesliga: despite back-to-back wins under Niko Kovac, they are in the bottom half of the table after 24 games.

Once again, though, BVB are well positioned in the Champions League. They finished 10th in the league phase, missing out on the all-important top eight by just one point. Only Barcelona scored more goals in the first part of the tournament.

Dortmund then breezed past Sporting CP in the play-offs, winning 3-0 away from home in the first leg before playing out a 0-0 stalemate at Signal Iduna Park.

The draw for the last 16 has been relatively kind. Lille’s top-eight finish shows they must not be underestimated, but Dortmund will be pleased to have avoided the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and Inter.

At the same time, Lille will not be too disheartened either. There have been signs of promise from BVB under Kovac, but it is too early to say the team has turned a corner. As their fans know all too well, Dortmund have a penchant for shooting themselves in the foot.

Lille punched above their weight in the league phase, where they memorably did the Madrid double by overcoming both Atletico and Real. Lille won five games in total, an impressive number given they entered the competition in the third qualifying round.

Bruno Genesio is an astute coach and his team showed in the league phase that they do not mind being underdogs. As well as those eye-catching victories over the two Madrid giants, Lille held Juventus to a 1-1 draw.

Their preparation for this match was not ideal, though, as Lille went down to a 4-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 at the weekend. They have been unreliable domestically of late and even lost to second-tier side Dunkerque in the Coupe de France last month.

Lille fans will hope that, just like Dortmund, their side is saving its best for the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund have just won back-to-back Bundesliga games for the first time all season, overcoming Union Berlin (6-0) and St Pauli (2-0) without conceding a goal.

That bodes well for the first leg of this Champions League tie with Lille, who have a patchy away record this term with just four wins in 12 league games at opposition grounds.

Signal Iduna Park is a fortress when it gets going and, despite their broader difficulties, Dortmund have been mostly strong on home turf in 2024/25.

Kovac has enacted improvements since replacing Nuri Sahin, giving Dortmund more balance, coherence and solidity.

This is a bad time for Lille to be facing BVB, who should come out on top in the first leg.

Borussia Dortmund have indeed looked more robust under Kovac, whose team did not concede a goal in either play-off game against Sporting CP.

Yet we still fancy Lille to make the net bulge here. It is something they did in all but one of their matches in the league phase, while overall they have scored in 90 percent of their games in all competitions this campaign.

Neither team will want to do a Sporting and be out of the tie at the midway point, so this will not necessarily be an end-to-end, goal-laden affair with both sides taking undue risks.

But with Jonathan David leading the line ahead of Angel Gomes and Hakon Arnar Haraldsson, Lille have what it takes to get on the scoresheet.

Keeping Dortmund out at the other end will be altogether tougher.

Serhou Guirassy to score any time

No player in the Champions League has scored as many goals as Guirassy, who became the first man to hit double figures in 2024/25 in the 3-0 victory over Sporting CP.

Having struggled to be as efficient in the Bundesliga under Sahin, Guirassy has exploded into life since Kovac took the reins.

The Guinea international smashed four goals past Union Berlin the weekend before last and he was also on the scoresheet when Dortmund beat St Pauli on Saturday.

Guirassy is a real handful and Lille will find it difficult to keep him quiet under the lights at Signal Iduna Park.

The former Stuttgart’s striker has been given a confidence boost recently and Dortmund are in line to reap the rewards on Tuesday night.
