Manchester United v Barnsley preview

Manchester United begin their Carabao Cup journey on Tuesday night with a third round clash against League One side Barnsley.

Erik ten Hag’s side got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Southampton on the south coast that ended a two-match losing streak which included a demoralising 3-0 defeat at home against Liverpool.

Saturday’s victory has lifted the Red Devils back into the top half of the Premier League table having now earned six points from their opening four matches of the league campaign and are now just three points off the top four.

Barnsley make their eagerly anticipated trip to Old Trafford on Tuesday night have enjoyed a mostly successful opening period of the new season, having won three of their last four matches in all competitions.

Darrell Clarke’s side three-match winning streak came to an end at the weekend as his South Yorkshire side fell to a 3-0 defeat to Stevenage, knocking them out of the top three and down into seventh place in the League One table.

The Tykes have already won two matches in the Carabao Cup this season to reach this third round stage and a huge trip to Old Trafford to take on the six-time winners, beating fellow League One side Wigan on penalties in the first round.

The second round saw Barnsley on the right side of a cup shock, winning a South Yorkshire derby against a Sheffield United side tipped for promotion from the Championship this season, beating their local rivals 1-0 to book their place in Tuesday’s game.

The two teams haven’t played each other since 2009, when they met in round four of this competition at Oakwell, when goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen saw the Red Devils progress en route to lifting the trophy later that season.

Barnsley have won only one of their last 18 matches against Manchester United in a run going back over a century to 1923, with that win coming in an FA Cup fifth round replay victory in 1998.

Sky Bet have boosted a handful of their odds ahead of Tuesday night’s standout Carabao Cup tie, which includes those for Joshua Zirkzee to have 2+ shots on target, now available at 10/11, and Casemiro to commit 3+ fouls, now at 4/1, both of which look like potentially money makers.
