The likes of Leeds United, Luton Town, Burnley and Middlesbrough are targeting promotion to the Premier League, but there are bound to be plenty of twists and turns between now and May.

Championship favourites to make it to Premier League in 2024/25

Three clubs will be celebrating promotion to the Premier League at the end of May. Who are the leading contenders to get out of the Championship this season?

Leeds United (4/6)

Leeds United are the favourites with the bookmakers to win promotion from the Championship in the 2024/25 campaign. The Whites reached the play-off final last term, but a 1-0 defeat by Southampton at Wembley Stadium condemned them to at least another year in the second tier. For Daniel Farke’s side, promotion is a must.

Even though Crysencio Summerville has departed, Leeds’ attacking options are the envy of the rest of the division. However, Farke’s team can at times be too reliant on individual moments of magic from their star men. The manager needs to find a way to increase Leeds’ collective creativity.

Bet on Leeds United to win promotion at 4/6 with bet365

Burnley (Evens)

Burnley are right up there among the strongest contenders for promotion to the Premier League. As we saw last season when Leicester City and Southampton went straight back up, relegated clubs have a distinct financial advantage in the Championship promotion race.

There are question marks over Burnley, though. The first is whether Scott Parker will fit in at Turf Moor. The second is whether there will be any sort of hangover from last season, when Burnley never even managed to get out of the bottom three in the Premier League. On the plus side, the Clarets have kept hold of numerous players who were involved in their promotion two years ago.

Luton Town (4/1)

Luton Town put up a valiant fight in the Premier League last term, but it was always going to be difficult for them to stay in the top flight. That experience did them good, however, and the fact that Rob Edwards remains in charge of the Hatters is a plus.

Luton have, for the most part, kept their squad together and they will hope to benefit from the continuity that brings. Edwards’ team will be awkward opponents as they were in the Premier League, but it will be interesting to see how they adapt to being favourites in most of the matches they play.

Bet on Luton Town to win at 4/1 with VBET

Middlesbrough (5/2)

A poor start to last season proved costly for Middlesbrough, who could not quite make up enough ground to sneak into the play-offs. Injuries did not help and if Michael Carrick’s team can keep key players fit for the entirety of the campaign, Boro will be a force to be reckoned with.

The squad is settled and built in Carrick’s image, while Boro should also benefit from having strength in depth across multiple positions. But there is genuine pressure on this team now and we will have to see how they handle it. Missing out on the top six this time around would not be good enough.

Coventry City (4/1)

Coventry City are a beacon of stability in one of the most turbulent divisions in Europe. Mark Robins began his second spell in charge of the club in 2017 and remains as dedicated as ever to the Sky Blues, who lost the play-off final in 2023 and then missed out on a top-six finish last term.

Robins has built a fine squad and Coventry have made some promising summer signings. But after some sluggish starts to seasons of late, it is vital that they hit the ground running this year. They could also do with becoming a touch more resolute. Having said that, Coventry are definite contenders.

West Bromwich Albion (5/1)

West Bromwich Albion’s bid to be involved in the promotion race has been harmed over the summer. Financial issues have forced them to sell some important players, with Okay Yokuslu, Conor Townsend and Brandon Thomas-Asante all heading through the exit door.

Do not write them off, though. Carlos Corberan is an excellent head coach and if anyone can keep West Brom competitive it is him. The Baggies will once again be tough to break down, but those who doubt their promotion chances will point to a possible lack of cutting edge up top.

Sheffield United (7/2)

Some Sheffield United fans will say that beating rivals Sheffield Wednesday is their main objective this season, but sealing promotion is more important than getting one over on your cross-city adversaries. Unfortunately for the Blades, there are reasons to doubt their ability to return to the Premier League.

Chief among them is the disastrous nature of last season, the adverse effects of which could spill into 2024/25. Chris Wilder has won promotion with United before, but he does not have a great record since leading his boyhood club to the top half of the Premier League in 2019/20.

Sunderland (5/2)

Last season was dismal for Sunderland, who went through three managers on their way to a 16th-place finish. There is yet another new man in the dugout at the Stadium of Light for 2024/25, but in Regis Le Bris Sunderland have landed a coach with an interesting background.

The Black Cats will be a dangerous proposition on the counter-attack. That is the style of play Le Bris favoured in his previous job at Lorient in his native France. But the Black Cats could do with a prolific centre-forward if they are going to challenge for the top two.

Queens Park Rangers (12/1)

Marti Cifuentes transformed Queens Park Rangers last season. After being appointed in late October with the Londoners in a precarious position, Cifuentes steered QPR clear of the drop zone in impressive fashion. Things are finally looking up at Loftus Road.

QPR were more than the sum of their parts in the second half of last season and that remains a useful strength. They will also be well organised without the ball and difficult to play through. Yet QPR do not have as much star quality as some of the big guns in the fight for promotion.

Swansea City (16/1)

The betting markets have Swansea City down as promotion underdogs, but we have seen bigger shocks than this in Championship history. The Swans finished 14th last term, but Luke Williams fulfilled his remit of keeping them up after taking charge in January. Now Swansea are keen to take the next step.

A challenge for promotion does seem unlikely, though. Swansea should score plenty of goals with Williams having had a full pre-season to install his attacking brand of football, but the danger is that they will be too open defensively.

Championship 2024/25 table

Here is the Championship table as things stand. Promotion will not be determined until each team has fulfilled all 46 fixtures.

How the Championship promotions work

The two teams that amass the most points over the course of the Championship campaign will be automatically promoted to the Premier League. The sides that finish between third and sixth will enter the play-offs and the winner of that end-of-season competition will also ascend to the top tier.

My Championship betting tips

Using the best odds from the bookies, these are my Championship promotion betting tips for the 2024/25 season, starting with the two teams I believe will go up automatically.

Championship top 2 double – Leeds United (6/5) and West Bromwich Albion odds (5/1)

Leeds United only narrowly missed out on promotion last season and we like their chances of getting the job done this time around. After a few years out of the Premier League, West Bromwich Albion are ready to return to the to table of the English game.

Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion promotion double – 13/1

Tipping both Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion to win promotion would net you £130 from a £10 bet. You can use our calculator below to work out your own promotion double odds.

Coventry City to finish in the top six – (6/4)

Mark Robins has done a fantastic job at Coventry City and they look ready to be in the mix for promotion once more. A top-two finish will probably be beyond the Sky Blues, but there is no reason why they cannot be involved in the play-offs.

Bet on Coventry City at 6/4 with Betfred

Oxford United to finish in the bottom three – (5/4)

At the other end of the table, this could be a season of struggle for Oxford United. The promoted side will give the Championship their best shot, but we feel they do not have the required quality to survive.

Teams promoted to EPL in the 2023/24 season

Leicester City had a wobble in the closing stages of last season, but they still did enough to win the Championship title and secure a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Ipswich Town also went up automatically, as the Tractor Boys returned to the top division for the first time since 2002. Finally, Southampton won promotion by beating Leeds United in the play-off final.

FAQ about the 2024/25 Championship season

Here are three key questions – and three important answers – ahead of the 2024/25 Championship season.

1. Which manager is likely to get the sack if they don’t end up in the promotion zone?

Daniel Farke led Leeds United to the play-off final in his first season as the club’s manager and there was little talk of him being sacked after the loss to Southampton. This time around, though, the pressure is on Farke. He is unlikely to be given a third campaign if Leeds miss out.

2. Which player is likeliest to get their team to EPL?

Burnley have kept hold of Josh Cullen, a player who was so integral to their promotion-winning campaign in 2022/23. The midfielder is at the peak of his powers at 28 and Burnley will be looking to Cullen to lead them back into the Premier League.

3. Which teams are likely to get relegated to League One?

Oxford United face an uphill battle to survive after a surprise promotion last time out. I expect Blackburn Rovers to finish in the bottom three as well, with Plymouth Argyle completing the relegated trio.
