Tuesday racing tips
- Market Rasen
3.05: Mohawk Chief & Moonset – Combination Exacta (1.5pts)
3.35: Cartonne 15/2 each-way (1pt)
Mohawk Chief & Moonset
Mohawk Chief was 40/1 at Fakenham on New Year’s Day, in a class 3 maiden and he had no right in taking second given how far back he was after taking the second last hurdle.
Then it was a similar story plugging on for a respectable third place at Fakenham, in two very strong run races from the eventual winners where the pace really dictated things.
A more subdued pace and this horse could put in a huge effort at a big price.
I’ve paired him with the favourite though to come 1st and/or 2nd in an exacta, as this horse could be anything.
He certainly looks better than the rest of the field so it would make sense from a value perspective to have the two battling it out at the line.
Moonset was 2nd at both 2m and 2m7f and going straight down the middle should be ideal.
Cartonne
I can definitely see the appeal of the favourite Hold Up La Colmine, both trainer and jockey are in good recent form as is the horse.
However, I would worry that he’s consistently placing third and has just one win over hurdles suggesting that final push to get the win isn’t quite there yet.
He’s been favourite three times over hurdles only justifying that price once and could be caught out over fences, despite the progression being likely.
Cartonne is my pick at a big each-way price as he’s got that experience over fences.
He placed well at Musselburgh two starts ago at the same price he is today and definitely has potential to win.
Pulled up last time out when going too quick trying to get a huge lead that ultimately saw him pull up last month over 3m7f.
A more measured approach would suit but so would the same approach of setting a strong pace where he could keep that push up for 2m5f rather than the 4m trip last time in a much tougher race.
