Marco Asensio has scored four goals in his last two starts for Aston Villa since joining on loan from Real Madrid in January, including a brace in his most recent outing against Cardiff in the FA Cup.

Aston Villa got back to winning ways on the weekend with a 2-0 win over Championship side Cardiff which saw them book their place in the quarter finals of the FA Cup, recovering well from their 4-1 defeat at Crystal Palace during the week.

The defeat at Selhurst Park is Unai Emery’s side’s only loss in their last six matches, though with only one win in their last seven Premier League matches, which has seen their bid for European football hit a bump in the road with the side currently down in 10th in the table.

The Villans have been fairing much better in the Champions League this season though, winning five of their eight group phase matches in their first season back among Europe’s elite since they were competing as European champions back in the 1982-83 season.

The West Midlands side finished the league phase in eighth place out of the 36 teams in this season’s new Champions League format, securing the final spot which saw them qualify automatically for the last 16.

Their opponents this evening, Club Brugge, finished the 24th and final qualifying position for the knockout phase, only goal difference keeping them in the competition, but won home and away against last season’s Europa League champions Atalanta to book their place in the Round of 16.

The reigning Belgian champions prepare for the visit of Villa with just one win in their last four games in all competition, which came in a 3-1 win in Bergamo, but have also lost just one of their last seven, though that did come in their most recent home game against Standard Liege.

Nicky Hayen, who three years ago was managing Haverfordwest in the Welsh Premier League, currently has his side second in the Jupiler Pro League, nine points behind runaway leaders Genk in his first season in charge of the Belgian side.

The two side have already met once this season in the group phase back in November when the Belgians inflicted Villa’s first defeat of their Champions League campaign, with Belgium international Hans Vanaken scoring the only goal of the game with a second half penalty.
