Thursday’s matchup will see two of the favourites to win the Europa League go head to head with both teams struggling in their respective league campaigns they would be hoping to put their poor form behind them and make a deep run in the competition.
Manchester United’s season has continued to disappoint, Ruben Amorim’s men currently sit 14th in the Premier League with just one win in their last four and were handed another setback over the weekend as they crashed out of the FA cup, losing on penalties to Fulham.
However the Europa League has been a different story as Manchester United are yet to lose in the competition winning all of their last five group stage games scoring 11 goals in the process.
Real Sociedad’s domestic season hasn’t been much better. The Royals sit 9th in La Liga losing five of their last seven league games and are currently trailing Real Madrid heading into the second leg of their Copa Del Rey semi-final.
Similarly to United however, the Europa League has made for a positive distraction for Sociedad, finishing 13th in the group stage just one point off of automatic qualification to the round of 16 with their only loss in their final four coming at the hands of group winners Lazio.
The Royals then proceeded to make light work of FC Midtjylland in the knockout play-off round beating the Superliga Champions 7-3 on aggregate including a comfortable 5-2 win at home.
Manchester United performances have improved recently but they still lack the creativity in the final third to cause issues to disciplined defences, and despite Real Sociedad’s disappointing season, the Royals have still managed to win 11 of their last 14 home games making Reale Arena an intimidating place to visit. This leads me to believe a 2-1 win for the La Liga side is the most likely outcome.

Despite only completing a full 90 minutes just once so far in Real Sociedad’s Europa League campaign, forward Orri Oskarsson has still managed to score four goals, the most of any player in the Real Sociedad squad.
Bruno Fernandes has been the heartbeat of this Manchester United team for years now, and recently it looks like he’s taken things even more into his own hands, the United captain has scored or assisted in four of his last five games in all competitions and Thursday evening should be no different.
