In June 2023, Manchester City became European champions for the first time in the club’s history.
Their 1-0 victory over Inter, sealed thanks to Rodri’s goal midway through the second half, also wrapped up the treble for Pep Guardiola’s side, who had already gone all the way in the Premier League and FA Cup.
It was a closer final than many anticipated. On the balance of overall play, Inter were probably worth a draw. City had more possession with 56 percent, but they were outshot by Inter 14-7.
Romelu Lukaku missed a gilt-edged chance and Ederson pulled off a fantastic save to deny Robin Gosens late on, breaking Inter hearts in the process.
The Nerazzurri will be looking to avenge that defeat on Wednesday, but their manager Simone Inzaghi knows that his side are about to face one of the biggest challenges in world football.
Manchester City have only won one Champions League under Guardiola, but they have been one of the best teams on the continent for some time now.
City are the favourites to lift the trophy this term and they have come flying out of the traps domestically, winning their first four Premier League fixtures.
Their attention now turns to the Champions League, where City will be targeting a top-eight finish in the revamped league phase.
The old group stage is out, replaced by a format in which all 36 teams are in the same league table. Each side will play eight matches, four at home and four away, with the top eight advancing to the round of 16. Those clubs ranked between ninth and 24 will then contest the knockout stage play-offs.
City face a couple of challenging away games against Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus in December and January, but the draw has been reasonably kind to Guardiola’s team overall.
Not that this meeting with Inter will be straightforward, however. Inzaghi’s men breezed to the Serie A title last term and were only eliminated from the Champions League on penalties by Atletico Madrid.
This could be one of the most entertaining encounters on matchday one, so free up some time in your schedule at 8pm on Wednesday.

Whichever way you look at it, this is likely to be a high-scoring game. Inter will not go hell for leather, but nor will they be timid. The visitors will pick their moments and look to catch City off-guard.

Haaland is not the only threat City possess. Kevin De Bruyne has also looked sharp in recent weeks, while it is surely only a matter of time before Phil Foden is unleashed.

Lautaro Martinez was Inter’s leading goal-getter in 2023/24, but he has had a slow start to the current campaign.
Thuram, on the other hand, has scored four times in as many games, and his speed and direct running will be an asset on the counter-attack on Tuesday.
