Inter vs Feyenoord predictions

Feyenoord pulled off a shock victory over AC Milan in the Champions League play-offs, but they are up against it in their bid to repeat the feat against Inter.

Goals from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez either side of half-time in last week’s first leg means Inter hold a 2-0 aggregate lead ahead of the return fixture at San Siro.

If Feyenoord were to come back from here, it would be one of the most surprising European comebacks in recent years. The bookies have priced them at up to 50/1 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Inter should not take anything for granted, but it would be disingenuous for them to deny the advantage they have at the midway point of the tie.

Despite Feyenoord’s decent start, the Nerazzurri were much the better team at De Kuip. They outshot their hosts 13-8, but there was a significant difference between the quality of the chances both teams created.

Inter ended up with an xG of 2.25, while Feyenoord mustered only 0.45. The Dutch team are fourth in the Eredivisie and Inter are top of Serie A. The first leg bore that out.

“The lads were really good, and it wasn’t easy in this stadium,” Simone Inzaghi said after the game.

“Our fans helped us a lot. We had to suffer a bit tonight but we didn’t have to for long. We were together when we needed to be. We know the challenges that the second leg will bring, but I am very happy.”

Inter are not among the outright favourites to win the Champions League, but it would be a mistake to discount them.

Inzaghi’s team were runners-up in 2023 and they finished fourth in the league phase, conceding just one goal along the way. No team has a better defensive record in this season’s competition than Inter.

Inzaghi’s team also packs a punch going forward, as evidenced by their return of 2.25 goals per Serie A game in 2024/25.

Inter will probably face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, and while the Bavarians would probably be favourites with the bookies, they would definitely not have everything their own way.

Before all that, Inter must complete the job against Feyenoord on Tuesday.

Inter vs Feyenoord betting tips

Can Feyenoord turn this Champions League last-16 tie around against Inter at San Siro?

Inter/Inter half-time/full-time

Robin van Persie tried to take the positives from his team’s performance in the first leg, but the Feyenoord manager knows it is a long way back from here.

Inter have a 100 percent record at San Siro in the Champions League this term. In each of their four wins in front of their own fans, Inzaghi’s charges held the lead at half-time too.

Inter have played 20 matches at San Siro in all competitions and have been defeated only once. Even then the victors were their co-tenants AC Milan, so not exactly a true visiting side.

Feyenoord played at San Siro last month and a 1-1 draw was enough to send them through on aggregate.

But as the Serie A table shows, Inter are a much stronger side than Milan right now.

Inter to score in both halves

Feyenoord pulled off some eye-catching results in the league phase, not least a 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich and a 3-3 draw with Manchester City in which they came back from three goals down in the final 15 minutes.

Yet they were also prone to collapses, as seen in a 6-1 thrashing by Lille and a 4-0 demolition by Bayer Leverkusen.

Those matches came when Brian Priske was in the dugout, but Van Persie has not had enough time to get his own ideas across yet. Anyway, the jury is still out on the former striker’s managerial abilities.

With the home fans behind them, Inter’s attack is likely to overwhelm a Feyenoord team whose confidence could collapse if they were to go 3-0 down on aggregate.

The hosts can find the net either side of the break, just as they did in the first leg.

Marcus Thuram to score any time

Thuram got Inter off and running at De Kuip and he will be keen to further add to his goal tally for the campaign in the second leg.

The France international has already notched 15 goals in all competitions this season, equalling his return in 2023/24.

Thuram has formed an excellent partnership with Martinez and that pair could run riot against Feyenoord if the Dutch outfit are not careful.

It is true that Thuram has not been as efficient in front of goal in recent weeks as he was early on in the campaign.

Even so, we like his chances of finding the net here.
