The Players Championship 2025 golf betting preview
The prestigious Players Championship is hard to win. And so it should be given that it rewards the champion with the richest prize in golf – a cool $4.5million.
As usual, the PGA Tour’s marquee event is held at their HQ at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida.
TPC Sawgrass, designed by Pete Dye, is a par 72 measuring over 7,300 yards.
Water lurks everywhere but particularly at the infamous 17th hole where the island green is surrounded by H20.
Plenty of players down the years have seen their hopes vanquished by tee-shots that ended in a watery grave and with testing winds forecast this weekend, the drama at Sawgrass’ penultimate hole will be ramped up.
It’s also a tournament where most of the top players have mixed records.
Even Tiger Woods struggled. While the great man went about accumulating his first 14 Majors between 1997 and 2008, he won this event just once (2001) before finally adding a second Players title in 2013.
But there is one star who has thrived here in recent years: Scottie Scheffler.
The World No.1 became the first player to defend this title last year and, despite no wins yet in 2025, he’s the clear favourite once more this time.
The Players Championship 2025 golf betting tips

Hideki Matsuyama the best bet
Scheffler is 5/1 to win again but at five times the price Hideki Matsuyama makes lots of appeal.
The Japanese golfer boasts an impressive record at Sawgrass with finishes of sixth (2024), fifth (2023) and eighth (2019) in three of his last four starts.
He was also leading the 2020 edition after a sparkling first-round 63 but that came to nothing after the tournament was abandoned due to the pandemic.
The 2021 Masters champion won twice on the PGA Tour last season and has already banked another victory in 2025 after kicking his campaign off with victory at The Sentry.
Matsuyama’s best often gets it done and he’s the pick at 25/1 each-way (1/4 odds, 5 places) with bet365
Back Matsuyama at 25/1 each-way (1/4 odds, 5 places) with bet365
Daniel Berger to beat Viktor Hovland in match bet
Daniel Berger and Viktor Hovland have played in the same event just twice this season – last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Genesis Invitational.
Berger finished 15th and 12th while Hovland missed the cut in both so the American is taken at 3/4 with bet365 to beat the struggling Norwegian in their 72-hole match bet.
Hovland has played well here before but was only 62nd last year and he’s pretty much struggled ever since.
Berger has finished 13th and ninth in his last two Sawgrass starts while he’s showing great consistency this season with five top 25s in six outings.
Back Daniel Berger to outplay Hovland at 3/4 with bet365
Keegan Bradley for Top American
Keith Mitchell had a solid West Coast Swing with four finishes between 21st and 33rd.
But now he’s back in Florida, expect the American to really kick on.
Mitchell won this event in 2019 and has finished ninth in his last two visits.
Keegan Bradley at 30/1 with bet365 to be Top American
