Real Madrid silenced their noisy neighbours in the first leg with a spectacular solo effort just four minutes in. Atletico drew back level before the half, with a spectacular effort of their own, former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez curling one in from the edge of the box into the top corner. But it was Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz who scored the all important winner 55 minutes in to ensure Real left the Bernabeu with a lead.

Atletico head into tonight’s must-win game having suffered another 2-1 defeat on the weekend at the hands of Getafe. The loss, only their third in the league this season, means that they now sit third in La Liga.

As for their Madrid rival, Real also replicated their scoreline, defeating Rayo Vallecano 2-1 thanks to two goals in four minutes from Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. That win ensures that Real Madrid enter tonight’s fixture with the extra boost of overtaking their city rivals by a point into second in the league.

Their clash this evening will be the fourth occasion these teams have met this season, with last week the only time a winner was found as both other fixtures ended in a goal a piece. Diego Simeone’s side can take confidence in their impressive home record this season, with only one loss in all competitions coming against Lille in the group stages. Atletico also have lost just once at home to Real Madrid in their past seven meetings.
