Liverpool vs Newcastle United predictions

Liverpool have not suffered too many setbacks this season, but the biggest one yet occurred on Tuesday night.

After a 1-1 draw on aggregate with Paris Saint-Germain, Arne Slot’s side were eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League on penalties.

It was a cruel way for Liverpool to lose, but the better team over the course of the two legs advanced to the quarter-finals. In 210 minutes of football, Liverpool were second best.

Despite that disappointment, this can still be a fantastic season for the club. Liverpool are out of the FA Cup but they are the bookies’ favourites to win this weekend’s EFL Cup final, while it is a matter of when rather than if they get their hands on the Premier League trophy.

Given this is Slot’s debut season following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, a Premier League-EFL Cup double would be more than satisfactory.

Liverpool, who beat West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur to reach the Wembley showpiece, are looking to win the tournament for a record-extending 11th time.

Remarkably for a club of their size, Newcastle United have never won this trophy. That means Oxford United, Swindon Town, Luton Town, Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers have done something Newcastle have not.

You have to go all the way back to 1955 to find the last time the Magpies won a domestic trophy of any kind. To say the club’s supporters are desperate to end that decades-long drought would be an understatement.

Newcastle got the better of Arsenal in the two-legged semi-finals, before which they sent Nottingham Forest, Wimbledon, Chelsea and Brentford packing.

Eddie Howe’s side are right in the mix for Champions League qualification, but the vast majority of the fan base would sacrifice a top-five finish for a day of glory this weekend.

Newcastle reached the final of this tournament two years ago, but they were outclassed by Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United on the day.

“We are there on merit, our run has not been easy this year, we’ve faced four Premier League teams, so we have done the hard yards,” Howe said last month. “Hopefully, we can learn from the last experience (against Manchester United) and improve our performance.”

Liverpool vs Newcastle United betting tips

Will Liverpool or Newcastle United come out on top in the final of the EFL Cup this weekend?

Liverpool to win by 1 goal

It remains to be seen how Liverpool will respond to their defeat by PSG.

This is an experienced group, though, and the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker have been there and done it numerous times before.

That suggests Liverpool will be able to dust themselves down and go again this weekend, although Newcastle are tricky opponents.

Last season, Howe’s team struggled to impose themselves on matches away from St James’ Park. In 2024/25, they have the third-best away record in the Premier League.

This looks set to be a close match, but Liverpool’s superior quality should get them over the line.

Draw at half-time

An injury crisis forced Liverpool to name a severely weakened team in last year’s final, yet the Reds still found a way past Chelsea.

That game was 0-0 after 90 minutes and, although another scoreless stalemate is unlikely, this looks set to be another tight match.

EFL Cup finals often are. Only one of the last six editions featured more than 2.5 goals. And in three of the last four finals, the score was level at the interval.

The exception was Newcastle’s loss to Manchester United in which the Magpies conceded twice in the opening 45 minutes.

That experience will make Howe even more determined to keep things tight early doors.

Mohamed Salah to score any time

No matter the opposition or occasion, it always makes sense to pick Mohamed Salah in the anytime scorer market when the odds are better than evens.

Salah was kept relatively quiet by Nuno Mendes in both legs against PSG, but that does not take anything away from the magnificent season he is enjoying.

Lewis Hall’s injury means Newcastle will have to field Tino Livramento at left-back on Sunday. The former Chelsea man is an accomplished defender, but he is much more comfortable on the right.

Salah should get the better of that head-to-head contest. Even if Livramento has a good game, the Egypt international only needs one half-chance to find the net.

Salah has the mentality to bounce back from Tuesday’s disappointment and make an impact in the EFL Cup final.
