Celtic v Slovan Bratislava preview

Celtic have made a perfect start to their new campaign as they seek a fourth consecutive league title, having also won 13 of the last 14 Scottish Premiership titles.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have started the new season with six consecutive victories ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League opener, without having so much as conceded a goal in the league so far.

The Glasgow side sit top of the table five games into the new season with maximum points, ahead of Aberdeen only on goal difference but notably are already five points clear of local rivals Rangers, who are expected to be their biggest threat in their title chase.

Wednesday’s match will be seen as a huge opportunity to record just a second Champions League victory since 2017, with Celtic heading into their opening fixture as odds on favourite for what must be the first time in a long time.

Making the trip to Glasgow on Wednesday night are Slovan Bratislava side preparing for their first match in the Champions League proper since 1992, back when they were competing in the Czechoslovakian league.

The Slovak side have already played 15 matches in all competitions this season, losing only one of those, with Vladimir Weiss’ side looking strong their quest for a seventh straight league title in Slovakia, having won five out of six in the league leaving them top of the table.

The Sky Blues joined the Champions League at the second qualifying round, and have had to win three two-legged ties to book their place in the Champions League proper for the first since the competition changed its name from the European Cup.

The Slovakian champions beat Slovenian side Celje 6-1 on aggregate in the second qualifying round, which was followed by a 2-0 victory over Cypriot side APOEL, and finally a dramatic 4-3 win over Danish side Midtjylland, which saw Slovan score twice in the last eight minutes of the second leg to win the tie.

The two sides haven’t met since the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup 60 years ago, when the Scottish side won 1-0 in each leg to progress before being knocked out in the semi finals by MTK Budapest.

Slovan boss Vladimir Weiss has managed against Celtic before though, in a remarkable Champions League second qualifying round tie while in charge of Artmedia Bratislava, in which Celtic lost the first leg 5-0, and came close to turning the tie around in the second leg, in the end only managing a 4-0 victory.

Celtic v Slovan Bratislava betting tips

Celtic will be expected to maintain their perfect start to the season on Wednesday night, though the visitors will so see it as great opportunity to start the campaign with a positive result.

VBet are offering 7/1 odds on a 2-1 Celtic win, which looks a sensible shout with both teams likely to be feeling nervy in what can be expected to be a cagey opening game, though the Scottish side’s superiority should shine through.
