The father of Sergio Perez has revealed that he was admitted to hospital following his son’s crash at the end of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Antonio Perez Garibay, who is a former politician, revealed that he fainted after the incident in Baku, while his team have given further details.

Speaking to mediatiempo, Perez Garibay said: “Everything happened after the accident

“The shock of the accident may have caused it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted.”

Scuderia Perez added the following statement, which read: “Mr. Perez Garibay is stable but continues in intensive care under constant medical review, focused mainly on his heart and other vital organs.

“The specialists in charge have indicated that his condition continues to be exhaustively monitored.

“On behalf of Mr. Antonio Perez Garibay and his entire team, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the Mexican Red Cross for its prompt intervention, which was essential to safeguard his life.

“Likewise, we extend our recognition and gratitude to the doctors and health personnel who are caring for him in a hospital in Mexico City.

“Mr. Perez Garibay will remain hospitalised for a few more days to continue his recovery. We thank everyone for their expressions of support and solidarity at this time.”

The crash that may have triggered Perez Garibay’s hospitalisation came out of nowhere on the penultimate lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Perez was fighting Charles Leclerc for second place behind Oscar Piastri, when Leclerc blocked a move from the Mexican into turn one.

That forced Perez into the path of Carlos Sainz, and when the pair exited turn two side by side, they touched, and dramatically both flew into the barriers at high speed.

The incident spewed debris across the track and prompted a safety car end to the race, with Perez fuming on the radio after.

“What the f*** is he doing there?” he yelled back to his team. “What the f***. Is he crazy or what? F****** idiot.”

Perez was on for one of his best results of the season at the time, having been faster all weekend than his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen, who has otherwise dominated the Mexican.
