Thierry Henry was left seriously unimpressed after trying to debate Major League Soccer with former Leeds forward Mike Grella live on air.

His CBS co-stars, on the other hand, loved every second of the awkward back and forth between the former New York Red Bulls players – even sneaking out the studio as it went on.

The much-loved CBS panel, which includes presenter Kate Abdo and pundits Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards and Henry, are finally back on fans’ screens following the return of the Champions League.

Grella, a former United States youth international, joined them live from the San Siro following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over AC Milan, with American Christian Pulisic bagging the Italian side’s only goal.

Touching on Americans playing in other leagues than the MLS to get the best experience, Henry said: “I said it so many times, I played in the MLS. I thought the American-based players in the MLS were better than the American players now in the MLS.”

He then asked Grella, who signed for the New York Red Bulls the year after Henry left, for his view – and after not coming out with a straight answer, the Frenchman pushed him for a response on his take.

Instead, Grella smiled and said: “I know you played in MLS, I replaced you. Remember?”

While Henry raised his eyebrows, Carragher and Richards couldn’t contain themselves, with the pair getting up from their seats to go hide in the corner as they could sense trouble brewing.

“Mike, don’t go there,” Henry said. “You won’t win that argument, don’t go there!”

Shouting from the corner of the studio, Carragher laughed: “Mike, I think that’s the end of your CBS career!”

Everyone was cracking up at this point – apart from Henry who still wanted an answer to his original question.

“No, the top players are probably in Europe,” Grella said.

“And before they were in the MLS?” Henry replied.

At this point, Carragher and Richards held hands and hilariously crept back to their chairs.

Grella then said: “Not all of them.”

“You’re dodging the question,” Henry said. “I’m asking, are the American players in the MLS before better than the American players that are now in the MLS.”

After a brief pause, Grella responded: “Probably, the answer is probably.”

Henry spent four years in the MLS after joining from Barcelona in 2010, making 135 appearances for the Bulls and netting 52 goals and assisting 42.
